What is Anxiety and What is It Not?

Anxiety; It is an emotion that many people are disturbed by and try to get rid of. People try all kinds of methods for this, but in fact, anxiety is a very important feeling that needs to be understood, not gotten rid of, that human beings have and to which we owe our civilization.

Anxiety, fear, which are often used interchangeably to put an end to conceptual confusion before starting the article. Let's define emotions such as anxiety and fear.

Fear is a disturbing negative feeling triggered by the perception of threat in the face of uncertainty. It is a vital mechanism that occurs as a stimulating response as a result of a specific pain or an event perceived as a threat. It is a universal feeling, seen in all living things. It is a response to a concrete danger.

Anxiety is a psychological and physical reaction of a person to a frightening or threatening situation. Every person experiences this situation from time to time. Like taking an exam or speaking in front of a group. It is a response to an uncertain and potential danger. (Like what if, what if, etc.)

Anxiety can be defined as a feeling about future events whose outcome is unknown but is believed to have a negative outcome.

To explain with an example, you are crossing the street and you A car is coming at the right speed. In this case, the emotion that makes you realize that you are in danger and react is fear. As you can see, it is an emotion that saves you. In such a situation, you would not want to not be afraid, it is thanks to this feeling that you were able to react when you were in danger. Anxiety is the feeling that arises when you start to think that there is no car and maybe you are not even on the road, what if a car comes and hits me? It is an emotion that belongs to living creatures that can think because it involves thinking processes. Thanks to this feeling, human beings have been able to calculate dangers in advance and take precautions. He was able to build warehouses without famine and build dams without drought. Anxiety is the feeling that arises when you say, "You are on the road, a car is coming, it is not fast, it is not close, or it is not clear that it is coming your way, and at that moment this car may come and hit me."

As can be seen, these emotions actually warn us of serious dangers. They are very useful emotions that keep us alert. So what's the problem then? If you ask; The problem is that too much of anything is disturbing. The reason you have too much is that you both do not understand the emotion and are disturbed by the emotions. If we can understand what our emotions are telling us at that moment and take the right precautions, we can actually take a good path forward. If we ask what it means to be disturbed by emotion; It means being afraid of being afraid, worrying about worrying, and trying to get rid of these things because we misinterpret fear. We will not try to get rid of them, we will understand them.

First, we can compare these emotions to an alarm and we increase the sensitivity of the alarms in places we value. Are you worried about your health or having a panic attack? This means that you care about your health. If you are worried about something happening to your children, it means you value your children too much. If you have religious concerns, it means you are careful to be a religious person. Are you worried about being disgraced? It means you care about being liked. Are you worried about taking the exam? It means you want to be successful. You will first understand what your emotion means to you.

The next stage is hidden in the word sensitivity. Sensitivity means sensitivity. The person looks at details in areas to which he is sensitive. If we look at the details, of course we will find problems. Because nothing is 100%, even if it is, it cannot be made to last 100%. For example, are you sensitive to cleaning? You notice the dirt around you. Do you have health sensitivity? You notice physical aches, pains, etc. We cannot clean a place 100%, even if we clean it, we cannot protect it. We cannot be 100% healthy, there are always aches and pains somewhere in our body and our organs work differently from time to time. In other words, we have a tendency to see normal situations in areas we care about as problems.

At this stage, our tolerance for problems in areas of sensitivity decreases and we begin to catastrophize. In other words, all of the things we find are real, but they are actually unimportant details that should not be taken into account, but are found in every person everywhere. Dirt on the floor is actually normal and harmless, physical changes are normal and harmless, but through catastrophizing we see these as terrible things. In other words, defecate with tiny dust grains on the ground. r looks the same, minor pains and conditions like cancer etc. look the same. These are completely normal things, they exist everywhere and in every person, you see them as disasters, they are not terrible, they are completely natural. No matter how hard you try, they will not disappear, and even if you can destroy them, they will come again. In fact, all of these are normal things and we need to accept them as normal.

In the final stage, we will focus on the methods we used to manage our anxiety before.

When you feel dirty, you clean, but can you feel clean even though you clean so much?

You go to the doctor because you feel sick, can you feel healthy?

Is the answer no? So, could it be the methods you use to solve your problems that make you so distressed? It is right to clean when you are dirty, but excessive cleaning makes you feel dirty. It is right to go to the doctor when you are sick, but doing too much makes you feel sick. Measuring too much blood pressure will cause high blood pressure. As you can see, when the truths used to solve problems are taken to an extreme, they cause even more trouble.

So what do we do to feel good? First we will understand what our anxiety tells us. And we will define this. I care about my health, I care about cleanliness, I care about being liked, I want to be successful. Then, we will take the same precautions as everyone else in these areas and live as recommended by experts. We will wash our hands for the right amount of time, we will go to the doctor if symptoms are visible, severe or lasting for a long time, we will pray as much as written in the books, we will perform ablution accordingly and we will do as much as normal in every situation. In other words, we will continue our lives in a way that is known, cared for and clear. We also need to reduce our excesses. We will stop excessive cleaning, we will not go to the doctor frequently, we will not measure blood pressure constantly unless recommended by the doctor. So we will resist these extremes that we have done wrong. As we resist, we will feel uneasy and more anxious, but if we are patient, everything will return to normal after a while. will exceed.
