Ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries encountered by orthopedics.
How does an ankle sprain occur?
In ankle sprain, the ligament structures on the inner and outer sides of the ankle are responsible for balancing the foot under normal conditions. they get damaged. Accompanying bone problems may also develop in ankle sprains, depending on the severity of the sprain. 90% of ankle sprains occur when the ankle turns outward and strains. The ligament complex on the outside of the ankle is damaged as a result of this strain, and swelling, pain, and limitation of movement may develop in the ankle due to sprain.
Ankle Sprain Treatment
The first thing to do after an ankle sprain. The thing should be protected by using it without putting any weight on the ankle. Afterwards, we should rest and apply cold, that is, ice.
A sprained ankle should be shown to an orthopedist as soon as possible and it should be determined whether there is an accompanying bone problem.
Ankle Sprain Treatment Process
After the ankle sprain is examined by an orthopedic specialist, it may be necessary to protect the ankle by supporting it from the inside and outside with various orthopedic orthoses depending on the condition of the foot. In cases of edema in the ankle, splints or casts can be applied to regress the edema.
After the ankle has overcome the first painful period due to sprain (approximately 10 days), the damaged ligament structures are treated with physical therapy and rehabilitation programs.
It will take between 6 weeks and 3 months for the patient to return to active sports, depending on the severity of the injury.
