Treatment of Anxiety Disorders

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a severe emotion similar to fear that people experience at certain periods. Under normal circumstances, anxiety protects the person from danger and prepares the ground for the ability to escape or fight, which is necessary for survival. This hardware is present in almost all people. With the deterioration of this equipment, which is very necessary for survival, a pathological condition called 'Generalized Anxiety Disorders' occurs. Without any fearful situation or object in the environment, the person feels as if something very bad will happen and is in a constant state of anxiety. This state of anxiety can reach the level of panic. It often negatively affects daily life and functionality. The general clinical presentation may include restlessness, irritability, restlessness, inattention, forgetfulness, and depression. In addition, some physical symptoms may also be present. Some of those; palpitations, rapid heartbeat, dry mouth, high blood pressure, muscle tension, sweating, tremors, facial flushing, frequent urination, goosebumps and difficulty breathing.​

Generalized Anxiety Disorder Diagnosis Criteria (DSM 5 TR)

A. There is excessive anxiety and anxious anticipation about some activity or event (school, work success, etc.) for most of a period of at least 6 months.

B. The person has difficulty in controlling his delusions.

C. These concerns are accompanied by three (or more) of the following symptoms:

Note: In children, only one symptom is sufficient.

Restlessness, irritability, or Being constantly on edge.

Getting tired easily.

Difficulty concentrating or going blank.

Getting angry easily.

Muscle tension. .

Sleep disorders (difficulty falling or staying asleep, or having unrefreshing sleep).

D. Anxiety, delusions or physical symptoms, causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.​

E. This disorder cannot be linked to the effects of a medication or a different health condition.​

Which medications are used to treat anxiety? Do these drugs have side effects?

Antidepressants, benzodiazepines, pregabalin, buspirone and antiadrenergic drugs are used in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Antidepressants that are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are primarily recommended. The effects of antidepressants begin late and require long-term use. Long-term use of benzodiazepine group drugs may be dangerous due to their potential to increase the need for sleep and cause addiction.

What are the non-drug treatment methods in the treatment of anxiety?

In the treatment of anxiety disorders. psychotherapy methods used; Options include cognitive behavioral therapy, solution-focused therapy, supportive therapy and relaxation techniques. Cognitive behavioral therapy is the most effective method known in the treatment of anxiety disorders. After the evaluation process in cognitive behavioral therapy, the individual is given psychoeducation about his/her disorder. Then, the individual's thought processing errors are found and cognitive restructuring is used to create a new thought and evaluation process. Then, it is gradually compared with the feared object or situation, and fear and other physical symptoms are tried to be reduced.
