Minnesota personality inventory (MMPI) is a test that evaluates personality traits and psychopathology. This test can be administered and interpreted by experts who have received MMPI training. It is primarily designed to test people suspected of having mental health and other clinical problems.
The 566-item MMPI has 10 clinical subtests and 3 validity subtests and is answered as 'true' or 'false'. Clinical subtests evaluated include:
Hypochondriasis (Hs) Includes a wide range of vague and nonspecific complaints about bodily functioning. It consists of 32 items.
Depression (D) It is a clinical subscale that measures depression, which is characterized by poor morale, hopelessness about the future, and general dissatisfaction. It consists of 57 items.
Hysteria (Hy) The Hysteria scale is based on 5 components. These; poor physical health, cynicism, shyness, headaches and neuroticism. It consists of 60 items.
Psychotic Deviance (Pd) It measures general social maladjustment. Items in this scale; It generally focuses on complaints about problems with authority figures and family, and alienation from oneself and the social environment. It consists of 50 items.
Masculinity/Femininity (Mf) It measures interest in professions, hobbies, aesthetic preferences, activity-passivity, and personal sensitivity. It generally evaluates how strictly a person conforms to stereotypical feminine and masculine roles. It consists of 56 items.
Paranoia (Pa) It measures interpersonal sensitivity, self-accuracy and suspicion. It consists of 40 items.
Psychasthenia (Pt) Designed to measure a person's inability to resist certain actions and thoughts, regardless of their maladaptive nature. This scale also taps abnormal fears, self-criticism, difficulties in concentration, and feelings of guilt. It consists of 48 items.
Schizophrenia (Sc) Bizarre thoughts, idiosyncratic perceptions, social alienation, poor family relationships, difficulties with concentration and impulse control, lack of deep interests, problems with self-worth and self-identity and ci It is a subscale that includes personal difficulties. It consists of 78 items.
Hypomania (Ma) Designed to measure levels of arousal characterized by a cheerful but unstable mood, psychomotor arousal (such as shaking hands), and flight of ideas. It evaluates behavioral and cognitive overactivity, irritability and egocentrism. It consists of 46 items.
Social introversion (Si) Social introversion, in which a person avoids social interactions and is uncomfortable with social activities and friends. Evaluates social extroversion, such as enjoying being alone. It consists of 69 items.
In the validity subtests; Filling out the items honestly and clearly is evaluated. Their efforts to define themselves as better or worse than they are can also be determined by these subtests. Again, having completed the test randomly and contradictory answers are evaluated with this subscale.
Getting high scores from clinical tests does not indicate that the person has that disease; the profile is evaluated and commented on as a whole. While the applying expert interprets the test results; It prepares a report in the context of the person's history and current psychological state.
