ANGER IN THE SOCIETY DRIVES ADDICTS INTO THE SWAMP

WHEN ADDICTED YOUTH ARE DRIVEN AWAY WITH ANGER AND FEAR, AND THIS DRIVES ADDICTS MORE INTO THE SWAMP.

Cardiology Specialist and President of Gül Substance Addiction Recovery and Youth Association Dr. Özgür Öz said that when addicted young people who need help and compassion are driven away with anger and fear, this drags the addicts further into the swamp. Özgür Öz, in his statement on the occasion of Green Crescent Week, said, “The Green Crescent Association was first established for the purpose of fighting against alcohol addiction. When we look at today, other than alcohol, different habits or addictions have emerged that are more widely used in society, more effective, and more captivating to young people. Of course, alcohol addiction is important for both our health, our soul, and our social life,” he said.

  • Dr. states that substance addiction is growing like an avalanche. Özgür Öz: “In today's period, cigarette addiction, alcohol addiction and drug addiction are extremely high. Cigarette addiction is in a more social and acceptable position and we see that the number of addicts is decreasing day by day. Alcohol addiction is partially decreasing and we can say that it is at the same rates as before. Substance addiction is growing like an avalanche. When we look at it today, we know that it has been brought to a level where children can buy it with very cheap money, even with their pocket money, and that it is encouraged. In fact, we know that it is even given free of charge at the initial stage in order to start children using substances,” he said. /ul>

Stating that substance addiction causes physical, mental and social diseases, Öz said, “The social dimension is much greater. The addict makes himself sick, his future becomes dark, and the society's attitude towards the addict makes the society sick. When we look at it today, there is a war against addicts. We see that there is anger, fear, anxiety. This is a disease of society. Therefore, unfortunately, these young people who need help and compassion are pushed away with anger and fear. This worsens the process of addiction. It puts children further into addiction and further into a dead end. Associations, universities, public institutions and even every citizen have duties. It is very important for our future generation. When we look at it today, we are all at risk in terms of addiction. Even we ourselves are at risk, how will we protect our children? Of course, we will protect it by fighting addiction,” he said. Saying that a person's health problems should be resolved, Dr. Öz said, “Because addiction means not being let go by will. Therefore, there must be a treatment process. At the same time, post-addiction rehabilitation is very important. However, rehabilitation of the family is also important. Because if we do not educate and teach the family, it will mislead the addict, alienate him from himself, and perhaps cause undesirable consequences. Therefore, as physicians, we have a lot to do in the fight against addiction. "Of course, a situation arises in which sociologists and psychologists need to spend serious time," he said.
