What are the Procedures and Operations Applied in the Treatment of Gum Diseases?

Dental Stone Cleaning

Dental stone cleaning is not a painful procedure, it is usually performed without the need for anesthesia. Scaling does not cause any harm to the enamel of the teeth. In fact, stones adhering to the surface of the enamel can decay the enamel by releasing acid. Therefore, scaling is a protective process for tooth enamel. The tools used are precision tools and do not cause scratches or damage to the tooth enamel. If bleeding continues in your gums despite cleaning, it means that advanced periodontal treatments are needed.

Gum pocket reduction surgery (Subgingival Curettage)

It can be roughly described as deep cleaning, the aim is under the gums. It is the cleaning of dental stones and infected tissues attached to the root surface. It is performed under local anesthesia, our patients do not feel anything during the procedure, and only need to use painkillers after the operation.

Flap Operation

In the later stages of gum diseases, the fibers between the root of the tooth and the alveolar bone are removed. It melts and spaces called pockets are formed between the gum and the tooth. In a healthy gum, the depth of this pocket is measured as 1-3 mm. Due to gum diseases, these pockets deepen and become difficult to clean. Bacteria and dental stones that cause infection in the pockets further accelerate bone resorption, causing problems up to tooth loss.

The aim of subgingival curettage and flap operation is to clean the tartars and microorganisms in these pockets and reduce the depth of the pockets. If the pockets are too deep to be cleaned by curettage, the gums are stripped from the teeth and alveolar bone, infected tissues and tartar are cleaned with special hand tools, then the gums are stitched together and primary healing is expected for a week to ten days. It takes 6-8 weeks for the tissues to fully heal and the pocket depths to decrease. If a restoration is planned on the teeth after this operation, the ideal waiting period is 6-8 weeks. Depending on the level of bone destruction during the flap operation, teeth may need to be strengthened with bone grafts. This decision is a decision that the physician will make during the operation. Gum diseases have a negative impact on general body health. It has a negative effect, the dense microorganism in the mouth can also settle in healthy organs of the body by being swallowed and entering the bloodstream. Studies have shown that gum diseases increase the likelihood of some systemic diseases (cardiovascular, diabetes, atherosclerosis, kidney diseases).

Gum diseases cannot be cured on their own or by using medications, mouthwashes, or vitamins. Medicines reduce the risk of infection after treatments and help complete healing without any problems, but their use alone, without periodontal treatment, will not give results!
