Desquamative Gingivitis, a gum disease seen during or after menopause, is the most well-known gum disease after or during menopause. There are generally two types: common and spotted. It is seen on the gums that coincide with the lip part of the upper jaw. The common one covers all the gums, and if there is a prosthesis in the upper jaw, the lesions are more common. Lesions can also be seen in the cheek mucosa and tongue. Patients complain of a burning sensation, especially when eating spicy foods and alcoholic beverages, and sometimes of a salty, bitter mouth and a metallic taste. Lesions disappear and reappear from time to time. In the stained type, there are irregular, red areas of varying volumes on the gums. In some advanced cases, even breathing and brushing of teeth become painful for the patient.
During menopause, not only the gums but also the teeth may become displaced. If the teeth become crooked with the emergence of gum diseases, orthodontic treatments may be considered, loosening of the teeth may occur or sunken teeth may occur. Age teeth may become mobile, old fillings and prosthetic treatments may cause problems.
