How Should Hair Care Be During Summer?

During the summer months, our hair becomes dry and damaged due to the negative effects of sun rays, sea and pool water. Dermatologist Dr. Özge Keseroğlu shared with us what those who want to have healthy and beautiful hair should pay attention to in the summer months.

One of the most important elements that complete a person's beauty is undoubtedly hair. People with healthy and well-groomed hair leave a more positive impact in their environments. However, in daily life, our hair becomes worn out and loses its health due to applications such as combing, drying, dyeing, perming or environmental factors. Although our hair needs care in every season, this need is at the highest level in the summer months.

The sun rays, to which we are exposed more intensely in the summer months, cause the protein structure of the hair to deteriorate. As a result, the hair becomes more vulnerable to external factors, dries out by losing its moisture, loses its shine, becomes weak and breaks. Sea and pool water increases the destructive effect of sunlight, as a result, damage to our hair becomes inevitable.

To protect from the harmful effects of the sun, be careful not to go out during peak hours. If you have to be outside or at the beach, try to stay in shade or under an umbrella. You can prevent your hair from being directly exposed to sunlight by wearing a hat, bandana or scarf. You can protect your hair from the harmful effects of the sun by using special hair care products with UV filters before going out in the sun.

Sea and pool are among the factors that damage hair the most. In order to be protected from the harmful effects of chlorine and salt water, the simplest solution is to cleanse the hair by taking a shower with plenty of water immediately after getting out of the sea or pool. After showering, remove excess water from your hair and reapply the protective care product.

Frequent showering in summer causes drying of hair. Therefore, when choosing shampoo, it is beneficial to choose shampoos that have high moisturizing properties and are designed for dry and damaged hair. If you feel that your hair is very dry, you can apply a nourishing mask every 2-3 days.

Using devices that give heat to the hair, such as blow dryers and straighteners, to dry or style the hair will cause the hair to dry out and break more. For this reason, during the summer months, it is beneficial to take a break from heat styling applications and let the hair dry on its own.

Avoid having your hair dyed, permed, highlighted, or balayaged before going on vacation. Hair strands weakened by exposure to such chemical processes are more intensely affected and damaged by sunlight, sea water and chlorinated water.

After the summer, it is useful to get professional support when necessary in order for your hair to regain its health. After your dermatologist's examination, hair mesotherapy or PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) treatments can be applied to improve hair quality and repair damaged hair. In hair mesotherapy, vitamins, minerals and amino acids that the scalp needs are administered into the skin in very small doses. In PRP treatment, the blood taken from the person is subjected to special processes, and the serum containing platelets is injected into the scalp with very fine-tipped needles. With these processes, hair quality increases, hair loss stops, and damaged hair is repaired.
