What are the symptoms of intraocular tumors?

Tumors arising from structures inside the eye primarily cause vision-related complaints.

If the tumor developing inside the eye is on the visual axis, it may cause visual impairment in the early period. Tumors located in the center of the eye can be diagnosed early because they impair vision while they are still small.

Ocular tumors located at the edge of the eye generally impair vision in the late stages. For this type of eye tumors, diagnosis may be delayed for this reason.

In some cases, tumors that develop inside the eye can cause retinal detachment by accumulating fluid. In case of such fluid accumulation in the eye retina layer, vision deterioration occurs as the eye retina layer loses its function. In these patients, flashes of light, lightning, darkness in the eye, and blurring of vision may occur.

Intraocular tumors in children may cause a white color in the pupil. It is typical to see a white reflection instead of red in the eye, especially in photographs taken with flash. These patients should immediately consult a physician who specializes in eye tumors.

Intraocular tumors can cause cataracts if they form behind the lens of the eye. Cataract also indirectly causes visual impairment in the eye. Patients with cataracts should be investigated for eye tumors.

Tumors located at the edge of the eye in the flow path of the intraocular fluid may cause inflammatory symptoms such as uveitis. Since intraocular fluid flow is impaired, eye pressure may rise and glaucoma may occur.

Tumors located in the eye near the optic nerve may also cause deterioration in the visual field and compression of the optic nerve.

Ocular tumors can also be seen as intraocular bleeding. If such a situation occurs, vision may suddenly deteriorate.

In cases of bleeding inside the eye or bleeding in the retina, an ultrasound should be done to check whether there is a tumor in the eye.
