EMDR Therapy in Children

Sad events in life negatively affect children as well as adults. In addition, children are also affected by the events their parents experience. A child does not necessarily have to be exposed to a negative event to experience trauma. Hearing or witnessing a negative event can also be traumatic.

A child who hears about the horror or violent games played, the movies watched, hears about these movies from his friends even if he does not watch them, or hears about the bomb attack from his parents even if he does not witness it, does not feel safe and feels unsafe. It has a traumatic effect.

Let's get to know EMDR Therapy

Children are negatively affected by natural disasters or human-made traumatic events. For example, in an area where an earthquake occurs, some children experience trauma, while others can laugh and have fun with their friends. This shows us that not every child is affected by the same event in the same way. While some people's wounds heal naturally after a while, others may still bleed. At this stage, I will tell you about EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Restructuring) Therapy, which gives rapid results in a short time and helps people close their wounds, creating a magical touch.

Nowadays, many people receive help from childhood to adulthood with EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). EMDR was also initially known as a technique used in traumatic situations. Nowadays, assertive therapy approach in solving all kinds of psychological problems is one of the little-known methods by parents in Turkey. Emdr Therapy; It targets unprocessed memories that contain negative emotions, sensations and beliefs. By activating the brain's information processing system, old memories are soon "digested". In other words, useful things are learned, useless things are discarded, and memories are stored in memory in a way that will no longer cause harm.

EMDR Therapy in Children

EMDR Therapy can be applied to almost all ages. Since I work with children, I will explain in which situations EMDR is applied to children and what effects it has.

When we experience bad events, we feel many emotions and thoughts and feelings about the event. Patterns never leave our minds. Think of it as a box in our minds that carries these complicated things. This confused box in our mind negatively affects our body, feelings and thoughts. The EMDR technique helps children by shrinking these boxes in their brains and then freeing them from these boxes. At the end of this, children move away from disturbing images, thoughts and feelings.

The magic touches of EMDR

EMDR gradually relieves many negative effects that occur in children as a result of traumatic experiences. It desensitizes. It neutralizes the negative memories, sensations and emotions in children's emotions, thoughts and bodies. The child remembers that memory, but has become desensitized. As a result of EMDR applied to a child who was experiencing nausea and vomiting constantly as a result of his anxiety, the child remembered what he was worried about, but his anxiety disappeared and his stomach was relieved.

Even though the negative events experienced by each child are the same, they have different effects. The magic touch of EMDR sometimes takes a single session, sometimes several sessions depending on the impact of the event and the child's condition. A child who was traumatized by a game he played was able to normalize as a result of a single session of EMDR therapy. He was able to cope with his fear and anxiety.

What problems does EMDR Therapy work with?

EMDR Application Areas; Emotions such as Trauma, Anger, Sadness, Fear, Attachment Problems, Depression, Learning Disorder, Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism and Developmental Disorders, Performance Enhancement, Psychosomatic Disorders, Behavior Disorders...

Effective results are obtained with EMDR in many traumatic experiences. These; human-made events such as birth traumas, diseases, attachment problems, sibling jealousy, school and learning problems, losses, accidents, violence, abuse, witnessing trauma, natural disasters, terrorism, negative experiences listened to or told about, loved ones, attachments It's what happens to a person.

Big T, Little t (Traumas)

Accidents, losses, serious illness and injury to self or someone else, physical or sexual assault, war, natural disasters with a capital "T" , and there are also lowercase “t”s. What we call small “t” traumas; These are traumas that can happen to anyone in daily life. Small “t”s; inadequacy, failure, comparison, exclusion, neglect, abandonment, humiliation, sexual harassment, etc. These are events that affect one person very much, but do not affect another person at all. If you ask whether a big "T" or a small "t" can be cleaned easily, the first thing that comes to mind is the big "T", but the truth is that small "t"s are more difficult to clean. Because we all experience thousands of little “t” events. We have many little "t" traumas that we do not know or are not aware of.

Experts work to desensitize major or minor traumas with EMDR therapy.

How is EMDR applied?

EMDR Therapy provides results to children in a shorter time than adults, with its magical touches. It is a fun therapy technique for children. EMDR applications include right and left eye movements where we stimulate two regions of the brain, which we call bilateral, touching the shoulder or knee, or stimulating with maracas or finger snapping, which children love very much. So why are we doing this?

With knotted channels EMDR applications, it is ensured that the right brain transfers information in coordination with the left brain. Communication between the left brain, the rational brain, and the right brain is ensured. We ensure that the memories stored in the right brain, that is, the memories in knots, are resolved by transferring them to the left brain. We open the tangled and tightly closed boxes in children's right brains and allow the boxes to be emptied. As a result, the boxes in the child's thoughts, emotions and body are lightened.

Since children's channels are shorter, the solution takes less time. However, when you think of adults, if they have a lot of past traumas, it may take a little longer than children, as they may all spiral into each other.

How is EMDR applied to children?

When applying EMDR to children, it is very important that the child feels safe. If he has experienced a severe trauma, he may have difficulty finding a safe place. In these cases, experts take some action. They help with hands. In our studies, we work with memories that disturb the child. We continue our work with children by having them draw their picture gradually and then using bidirectional stimulation. We conclude our work with many cognitive interventions. The important thing is that we do not erase your child's memories, we only pave the way for the neutralization of the negative thoughts and accompanying emotions and sensations related to that event. For example, a child who had an accident still remembers the accident after EMDR studies, but does not feel any negative thoughts, emotions or body sensations related to it. His negative belief about himself turns into a positive belief.

The families are very surprised by the fact that a child who cannot sleep in his own bed at night and is afraid can sleep alone in his room after EMDR studies and that this happens for a short time. The gradual decrease in these behaviors of a child with obsessions and tics after EMDR studies increases the family's belief in the EMDR technique. When working with young children; The mother is also included in the session and the child participates in the study on the mother's lap.

Trauma Recovery Group Volunteers

There is an EMDR HAP organization that provides voluntary and free support to victims after traumatic events all over the world and uses EMDR for humanitarian purposes. An extension of this international aid network also serves in our country. The "Trauma Healing Group", which applies EMDR Therapy on a voluntary basis, has intervened in traumatic events that affect many people in our country. This group voluntarily provides services to victims of natural disasters or man-made terrorist events in Turkey. For example, many volunteer EMDR therapists carried out studies on the Soma Mine Accident, Airport Explosion, Çanakkale/Ayvacık Earthquake, and Izmir Courthouse Attack. As a result of the studies, very effective results were obtained and the people studied survived the effects of the events.

Sad events in life negatively affect children as well as adults. In addition, children are also affected by the events their parents experience. A child does not necessarily have to be exposed to a negative event to experience trauma. I heard about the negative incident. In fact, witnessing it can also be traumatic.

A child who plays games with horror or violence, movies watched, hears about these movies from his friends even if he does not watch them, or hears about a bomb attack from his parents even if he does not witness it, does not feel safe and has a traumatic effect. .
