- Should we perform hernia surgery by closed method or open method?
Hernia is caused by potential weak areas in the abdominal wall, where internal organs are removed. It is a serious disease that progresses under the skin and manifests itself as a mass or pain, causing harm that may even result in death if left untreated. Although the herniated organ is most often the intestines, it can be any organ in the abdomen. Inguinal hernia is the most common in men and umbilical hernia is the most common in women. The only permanent treatment for hernia is surgery. Many methods have been described, especially for inguinal hernia, from history to the present. Nowadays, laparoscopy has become increasingly widespread and used in every field, which has led to its development in hernia surgeries.
Although it does not have much superiority over open inguinal hernia, it provides a better appearance in terms of aesthetics. Although recurrence rates are the same as open hernia surgery, the opposite of the previous operation should be preferred in recurrent hernia surgery. So, if the first surgery was performed with an open technique, the new surgery should be performed with a closed technique or vice versa. The closed method is applied more easily in women than in men. Closed method is more expensive.
Considering all these, it is thought that laparoscopic (closed) hernia repair should be preferred in women, recurrent hernias and newly formed inguinal hernias.
