DETAILED REVIEW OF THE BOOK "DUKAN DIET"

Nutrition has always been an indispensable need of human beings from the first humans to the present day. The ever-developing and changing world has brought with it new technological developments. In parallel with the developments in technology, an increase in sedentary life has been observed and weight gain, unhealthy nutrition, irregular meal habits, etc. Many nutritional problems have emerged. Negative changes in their bodies have pushed people to new directions regarding nutrition, and popular nutrition books have been the cornerstone from time to time in the last 50 years. In general, people who do not want to perceive the problem have always shown interest in Nutrition and Diet books, which have adopted the slogan of bringing results with a few suggestions. I will share the review of the best-selling book "Dukan Diet". Since the author generally repeats the same topic in the book, I did not include the places he repeated.
page 7=The sentence "Let's at least try." is included in the preface. We know that this is not ethically appropriate and that no diet would be implemented as an experiment with this understanding.
Pg9=The author expresses his first self-criticism very well in the last 2 paragraphs of this page. In the last sentence, he admits that he was not actually conscious when he started to follow the diet by saying "I had no knowledge of any intricacies of the science of nutrition." We know that weight loss is healthy when it is 4-6 kg/month, but in other cases it may regain its weight or cause other diseases. The author states that one-sided nutrition causes problems in vitamin-mineral and fiber intake. However, the Attack Phase of the diet remains unchanged, and after a while he adds only vegetables to the one-way nutrition program.
Pg12=The author, who tells his patients that he should stay away from normative approaches, contradicts himself by asking them to follow the rules of this diet for the rest of their lives.
Pg15=Calories hair tie to counter He argues that the predictions about calories are wrong with the sentence "maybe". He does not emphasize that the wrong thing is to consume excessively high-calorie foods.
Page17=The author unknowingly makes his 2nd self-criticism. He says that he has examined approximately 210 of the hit books in the last 50 years, that they remain bestsellers, but that they bring about various problems along with one-sided nutrition, and that he questions the existence of diet books that are questioned by all nutritionists.
Page19=There is no room for misinterpretation or ambiguity in his book. explains that its applicability is very high. However, as I mentioned at many points in my article, there are many unexplained errors and mistakes. For example, what can vegetarians do in the first phase of their diet that includes protein? The answer to this question is not given at the beginning.
Pg24=He boasts that he has 2 slices of bread, 1 portion of fruit, 1 portion of cheese, 2 portions of carbohydrates per week and 2 portions of reward food per week in the 4th phase of his diet at its most liberal. However, we know that the amounts of these are not sufficient for the body and are not healthy.
Page25=He recommends eating oat bran every day at every stage of his diet. When I looked at oat bran, which I had limited knowledge about before reading the book, I saw that it was available in very few places, its price was high, and that it was traded on sites opened just for this book on the internet. Although it is ideal to consume oats because they contain carbohydrates, give a feeling of fullness, and are high in fibre, not mentioning equivalent foods and portraying oats as the only solution adds another mistake to the book.
Page 26=He emphasizes that carbohydrate consumption is prohibited in the first stage of the Dukan Diet. We know the many benefits of consuming carbohydrates.
Pg35=It states that while 100 calories of protein-containing foods are digested, 30 calories are burned, 12 calories are burned in fats, and 7 calories are burned in carbohydrates. This is a wrong statement. The normal statement is that an excess of protein-containing foods accelerates metabolism. In other words, we burn 100 calories of the protein we consume as 100 calories. However, our metabolic rate and the calories we spend increase, which is different for each person.
Page36=On this page. a “Of the three main nutrients, only proteins are indispensable for our survival.” sentence is mentioned. This is a sentence that even a not very educated person, other than a medical doctor, would research and question. During our training, we were told about the contributions of all nutritional elements and the importance of their intake.
Pg38=It was not evaluated how consuming animal proteins in the first stage of the diet would be applied to gout patients and patients with uric acid problems.
Pg46=The main composition of the human body. He says that a diet of 5 units of CHO, 3 units of fat and 2 units of protein should be parallel to this. However, when we look at his diet, we see that these ratios are in favor of protein. In addition, the defense of his diet that we cannot accept is written: "Reducing the absorption of calories by regulating the diet in the most radical way is possible by consuming only one type of food."
Page 56=Our author also made a common mistake that everyone makes today: drinking coffee and tea with water included in its consumption. Coffee and tea positively added to the consumption of 2.5 liters of liquid. He did not state that coffee and tea cause fluid excretion from the body. Light kept the drinks unlimited and made another mistake by saying that these drinks contributed positively to liquid consumption.
Page78=This is the first and only page where the concept of Nutrition and Dietetics is mentioned. The author mentions the existence of suitable congresses here.
Page80=He states that there is no limitation in sweeteners. However, we place restrictions on sweetener dosages. It causes body swelling, kidney damage, diarrhea, etc.
Page87=He says that patients should be weighed frequently, even every hour. Here, he makes an unhealthy suggestion by ignoring the importance of the obstacles and psychological pauses that may arise from the field of application of the diet.
Pg99=Like most popular diets, he recommends foods such as "Dijon mustard, paraffin oil", etc., which are difficult and expensive to access.
Pg103=It gives incorrect suggestions about regional slimming, it does not state that exercise is the only way to lose regional weight. He suggests that it can be through nutrition.
Page121=Body Mass, which is accepted by WHO and is considered the most practical to use. He states that the Index is unnecessary and is only theoretically applicable. He describes a relative calculation formula outside of scientific language by defining the perfect calculation that can be achieved at the right weight as "the best weight that the patient will feel". He also makes another self-criticism about his own diet, which does not include fruit.
Page125=He says that a maximum of 1 portion of fruit should be consumed per day. He mentions that fruit immediately raises blood sugar. He ignores that it is a source of vitamins and fiber. He explains this by saying, “Actually, fruit is not an example of natural and healthy foods.” He makes an incorrect sentence by saying.
Page128=“I am not a fan of weighing foods.” He expresses another wrong judgment against a good suggestion.
Pg134=In the last stage of his diet, he continues his normative, limiting and challenging diet by requesting the consumption of only animal proteins on Thursdays throughout his life.
Pg154=Everything throughout his life. By requiring the consumption of 3 tablespoons of oat bran per day, he treats people who are on a diet as chronically ill and sets the biggest rule of his ruleless diet, which he constantly boasts about.
Page161=He says that nutritionists give diets of 600-900-1200 or 1500 kcal. It does not take into account that dieticians look at each person's needs and prescribe a minimum diet of 1200 kcal to avoid vitamin-mineral deficiency.
Page169=“Eat a balanced diet”, “Eat 5 portions of fruits and vegetables a day.”, “Eat less, exercise more.” He adds another mistake to the Dukan diet, arguing that suggestions such as these are not very useful.
Page219=When the one-week Dukan Diet menus are examined, it is seen that they contain very few nutrients compared to normal diet prescriptions. The main reason why this diet causes weight loss in the short term is that it actually contains fewer calories when calorie calculations are made, which it does not consider important.
Pg233=It unintentionally puts the obese into an unscientific classification such as obese, tending to obesity, severely obese.
Pg238=Your BMI is 28. It says take action. It does not explain the average BMIs for age and the need to take immediate precautions when these BMI values are exceeded.
Page240=Cold foods i He also argues that you can lose weight by taking a shower in cold water. I had no idea about this until I read it here. However, when I researched on many websites, it was stated that cold foods or a cold shower burn approximately 10 more calories. As we know, this calorie value will not directly affect our weight loss.
Page243=The author says that his patients should stay away from sports during the first phase of the CHO-free diet. In other words, while self-criticizing that the required glucose cannot reach the muscles and that not enough glucose is taken, for the first time sports is not recommended in a diet program that does not have joint and cardiovascular diseases. It ignores that diet cannot be applied directly to obese individuals who are not healthy.
