Obesity is a disease that occurs with more than normal accumulation of fat tissue in the body. It is an important public health problem that is becoming increasingly widespread in the world due to reasons such as wrong
nutritional habits and lack of physical activity. Many diseases that occur due to obesity (such as cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes, some types of cancer) reduce the quality of life of individuals and can lead to death. On the other hand, it also negatively affects the country's economy with the increase in health-related expenses. According to Turkey Nutrition and Health Survey (TBSA) 2010 data, the prevalence of obesity is 20.5% in men and 41% in women. As a way to get rid of obesity, people turn to slimming tea, also known as diet tea. Many of my dieting clients expect me to fill the list with metabolism-accelerating teas and expect those teas to work miracles as soon as possible. They come with complaints such as: My edema is not decreasing at all, I am on a diet and cannot lose weight, drinking water helps, my friend is losing weight faster than me. In fact, the most important reason underlying these sentences is the metabolic rate, which is different in all of us. This speed is unique to everyone, like a fingerprint, and plays a role in the weight loss and weight gain process. Generally, a miraculous food or a magic drink is sought to lose weight, but no food alone will make you gain weight or lose weight on its own.
What is Diet Tea?
You can buy it online, in stores or markets where diet products are sold. Teas that claim to facilitate weight loss, which can be easily purchased from pharmacies, prepared by herbalists or sold ready-made, and marketed alone or as a combination product, are "diet teas". These teas often contain phrases such as 'fat burner', 'slimming tea', 'metabolism accelerator' and 'preventing fat' to attract the attention of consumers. Reasons such as the fact that such products are easily accessible, they are thought to be natural and harmless, and they are frequently advertised, increase their use by the society. Case reports reporting side effects as a result of unconscious and widespread use of slimming tea are also increasing. Diet teas marketed as natural or herbal are stated in their ingredients. It may contain chemicals that are harmful to human health. Many diet teas may contain higher amounts of active ingredients than the maximum recommended dose.
The effects of the herbs in diet teas are actually laxative, diuretic, perspiration enhancer, digestive system stimulant and carminative. In this way, they can help you lose weight. Long-term use of diet tea, that is, laxatives and diuretics, causes large amounts of water and electrolyte loss in the body. As the body's fluid and electrolyte balance is disrupted, heart and muscle disorders may develop or various pre-existing diseases may be exacerbated. In potassium, calcium and magnesium deficiency, the contraction power of the heart decreases and heart failure may occur. Abdominal swelling, cramps, nausea and vomiting may occur due to disruption of stomach and intestinal movements. Since the amounts of herbs in the composition of diet teas are not known exactly, they may accumulate in toxic doses in the liver and cause acute hepatitis, irreversible damage to liver tissue and liver failure.
