Your ear; As a result of the excessive angle with the head; It is a condition characterized by being conspicuous enough to attract attention when viewed from the front or from behind. This condition is popularly known as prominent ears.
Having ears like this does not cause any problems in terms of physical health. However, concern with a person's appearance may cause some problems. Especially in childhood, this can cause significant psychological disorders. Being nicknamed "prominent ears" by friends during school age and being referred to in this way can be a cause of psychological trauma in a child during the development period.
In later ages, this can cause hiding the ears by wearing a hat, posing to hide it when taking photographs, and using a headband for girls. and it is reinforced by avoidance behaviors such as choosing hairstyles that cover the ear.
The solution to get rid of this disorder is prominent ear surgery. While this surgery is performed under general anesthesia in childhood, it can be performed under local anesthesia and/or sedation in adulthood.
There are generally two main problems in prominent ear deformity. The first is that one of the folds of the ear, called antihelix, is faint, and the other is that the angle of the ear with the head is too high. Most of the time, these two problems coexist.
The procedure performed in the surgery is to re-create or clarify this faint fold with an intervention behind the ear, and at the same time narrow the angle. Since the ear cartilage has completed its development in adults, the cartilage shaping process must be supported with stitches. The scar resulting from the surgery remains as an inconspicuous scar that can be hidden behind the ear.
There is no need to stay in the hospital for this surgery. Dressing is applied for the first few days after the surgery to reduce the swelling that will occur in this area, which we call edema due to the surgery. After 2-3 days, the dressing is removed and the tennis player's band is applied. This tape is used continuously for the first week, and then at bedtime for two weeks. After the dressing is removed, the patient can take a bath, unless there is an adverse situation.
There is no or mild post-operative pain. It can mostly be overcome with oral painkillers.
Mostly, there will be no stitches to be removed. It may take up to 6-8 weeks for the patient's surgery-related swelling, which we call edema, to subside. It takes between 6 months and 1 year for the shape of the ear to fit properly.
Points to underline about this surgery:
a- smoking Its use is a factor that can negatively affect the results of the surgery,
b- the patient does not experience any problems with his hearing
