Being Traumatized by the Media
Media, that is, press-broadcast, is a term used in daily language to describe electronic
or print media organs such as radio, television, newspapers, magazines. In today's world
media communication tools have an important place for us. Because we hear many local and universal news
through the media. Unfortunately, most of these news are terror and war news that will create sadness and trauma for us. The news we see or hear on television, newspapers, magazines, radio, and social media affects us visually and audibly positively or negatively.
As proof of this; Doctor Pam Ramsden from the University of Bradford examined the reactions of 189 people to various events. Dr. As a result of the research, Ramsden revealed that some social media users show symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder after watching violent or disturbing images on the screen. ''This research does not indicate that those who watch some images on the screen have post-traumatic stress disorder. The study reveals that people may experience some symptoms similar to post-traumatic stress disorder. However, this may vary from person to person. Even if some people are exposed to the same traumatic news for days, they are not affected negatively. On the other hand, someone who watches a terrorist attack video for the first time may cry for hours. This is related to the person's level of resistance and past life. It warns about the effects of binge-watching and publishes preliminary warnings about images that may have negative effects.
But social media, unfortunately, lacks this protection. Therefore, individuals should learn how to be a conscious
user. For Turkey, it is in the newspaper. They should pay attention to the news and expressions to be published and impose a template limitation. A protective warning should be placed on traumatic
news published in the media. This may be with a warning article on the first pages of newspapers. Similarly, disturbing images should not be published randomly on social media. There must be a warning letter from.
