HOW IS A HEALTHY SLEEP?
Sleep is an unknown that has attracted the attention of scientists for centuries. Intensive sleep research in recent years has shown that this process is not a passive process, but a tightly controlled and quite complex one. Some studies indicate that the sleep phase, in which dreams are common, is a period in which the data we receive while awake are processed and coded in the brain. REM sleep, in particular, is thought to be very important in terms of learning and memory.
Sleep;According to EEG studies, it consists of 6 stages, including wakefulness and 5 sleep stages. The period in which dreams occur most frequently is the REM period. This period is named by the abbreviation of the initials of the words Rapid Eye Movements. It also goes from mild to severe. There is a non-REM period in which there are 4 different periods: Sleep, which has a decreasing period since birth, is 17-18 hours in newborns, 8-9 hours in adults, and 4-5 hours in old age.

WHAT IS SLEEP APNEA SYNDROME
Apnea; Breathing in sleep is shorter than 10 seconds It is known as excessive sleepiness. In Sleep Apnea Syndrome, as a result of frequent stopping of breathing during the night, a complete sleep occurs in the brain, even if the person is asleep. However, as a result of this situation, which can be seen in the EEG, the person wakes up tired and unrested in the morning because he cannot sleep fully. The error occurs for a long time during the night. Even if he sleeps, he always seems tired and sleepless. In case of the slightest inactivity (sitting in front of the TV, reading a book or newspaper), he falls asleep.
Snoring at night is the most important symptom in people. Most of the time, his/her spouse and It can reach a level that disturbs the neighbors. Frequent trips to the toilet at night, morning headache, dry mouth in the morning, sweating, forgetfulness, and lack of concentration are common.
HOW DOES SLEEP APNEA OCCUR AND ITS DIAGNOSIS
In these people, there is usually narrowing of the internal structures in the upper respiratory tract, nasal passages and throat. Large tongue, large tonsils, small chin, adenoids in children, nasal bone curvature, allergic rhinitis, alcohol, sleeping pills cause diseases.
As a result of these various anatomical disorders, the airway narrows as a result of the contraction and sagging of the muscles in the uvula and nasal area while breathing. As a result, snoring, decrease in the amount of air going to the lungs and stopping of breathing occur.
DIAGNOSIS OF THE DISEASE:
A-The patient usually has daytime sleepiness.
B-Asleep. There are periods of breathlessness.
C- Snoring is the most common symptom
The diagnosis is confirmed by performing a polysomnographic examination on a person with these 3 basic symptoms.
In polysomnography, one hour of sleep. Diagnosis is made if the number of breathing pauses lasting more than 10 seconds is five or more.
TREATMENT FOR SLEEP APNEA
Unfortunately, it is a common disease. Although it is a disease that is often ignored, ashamed, and considered natural, a doctor is not consulted until the very advanced stages of the disease. Usually, a doctor is consulted with the pressure of the person's spouse.
In the treatment, it is appropriate to first examine an ENT specialist for an anatomical disorder, if there is one, to correct it. .The presence of goiter, COPD, and heart failure in the patient should be investigated. Especially witnessed apnea (if breathing stops during sleep is described by the patient's relatives) should be diagnosed by polysomnography examination in a sleep laboratory with appropriate technical and personnel equipment.
The most commonly used method in treatment is the application of high pressure air to the airways through the nose with a CPAP mask. Thanks to this pressure, the narrowed airways are opened and the person's snoring and respiratory arrest are eliminated. However, for this treatment to be effective, the mask must be worn constantly throughout the night.
In addition, supportive treatment methods should be applied, such as not sleeping on your back, not drinking sleeping pills or alcohol in the evening, and losing weight if overweight.
