How Does Climate Change Affect Our Psychology?

Climate change, which has been going on for years and continues to show its effect today, threatens the life of all living things. The unusual changes in the seasons, the melting of the glaciers, and the pollution of the air day by day are only harbingers of what will happen to us in the future. While we were just becoming aware of the seriousness of the situation, environmentalist youth were warning us about what would happen to us. So did we listen to them? How many of us have tried different alternatives to deodorant, reduced the use of plastic bottles, used recycled products, or paid attention to the use of water while brushing their teeth? I hope the positive answers to these questions are higher than I expected. Well, why were the young people on the streets when we were having difficulty in putting what was said into practice?

I think it would not be wrong to say that the young people born in 2000 and later, also known as Generation Z, are growing up more consciously than we are. Thanks to the point where technology has come, we can control events that take place miles away as if we were there. Generation Z, which uses this technology most effectively, does not hesitate to lend a helping hand. Young people of this generation, unlike us, prefer to stand up and try. They know that this world is ours and we must protect the only home we have.

As a result of climate change, not only the resources necessary for our lives are reduced, but also our psychology is adversely affected. Knowing that there are people in the world who have died due to lack of resources and cannot even reach the needs such as water and basic food that we can easily access, pushes us to pessimism. Especially in countries like Türkiye where four seasons are experienced, people have expectations from the seasons. When they cannot meet the seasonal characteristics they are used to, anxiety begins and this creates a feeling of imbalance in people. The disruption of seasonal changes also disrupts the body clock. The transitions in seasons are getting rougher and people are getting flu etc more often. they get sick. This change they feel in their bodies reduces their debilitating efficiency and they begin to believe that something is wrong with them because they are sick more often than before. This situation creates serious psychological problems in individuals and

Climate change brings with it natural disasters. Drought, flood, landslide and related tremors etc. Disasters such as these cause trauma to individuals directly or indirectly. Post-traumatic anxiety disorder, which a person experiences as a result of a natural disaster, can negatively affect him throughout his life. Living with a trauma can mean the same as experiencing a disaster every day. While a natural disaster happens once in a year, a trauma can happen every day. Being on the alert all the time makes the person mentally and physically tired. In such cases, professional support should definitely be sought and work should be done on trauma.

With the hope of listening to the young people who give us hope and saving our home world, hand in hand...
