The World Health Organization (WHO) defines obesity as "abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat in the body to the extent that adipose tissue impairs health". We can simply define obesity as an increase in fat tissue as a result of a disturbance in the energy balance in our body. Today, it is described as an eating behavior disorder and appears as a health problem that negatively affects life expectancy and quality with metabolic, hormonal, physiological, psychological, aesthetic and social effects.
Primarily cardiovascular diseases and endocrine system. It is a health problem that affects all organs and systems of the body and is therefore considered one of the 10 most risky diseases by the World Health Organization (WHO).
How Can We Simply Understand Whether We Are Obese?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the index used to classify obesity. It is calculated by dividing your weight (kg) by the square of your height (m). With this calculation, BMI classes
18.5 and below are THIN,
18.5 to 25 are NORMAL,
25 to 30 are FAT,
>Between 30 and 35, 1st Degree OBESE,
Between 35 and 40, 2nd Degree OBESE,
Between 40 and 45, 3rd Degree OBESE, also MORBID OBESE,
Between 45 and 50 are classified as 4th degree, and at the same time, they are classified as MORBID OBESE
50 and above are classified as SUPER OBESE.
Ex: A person who is 1.70m tall and weighs 90kg. Let's calculate the individual's BMI class.
1.70x1.70 = 2.89 90/2.89 = 31.14, that is, it is in the 1st Degree Obesity class.
Besides BMI, waist circumference, Hip circumference, waist/hip ratio and skinfold thickness measurements are also indirectly among the obesity diagnostic criteria.
Waist circumference must be below 94cm for men and below 80cm for women. A waist measurement of 102cm and above in men and 88cm and above in women can be considered sufficient as a diagnostic criterion for obesity. Individuals with these values are at high risk of contracting many chronic diseases. (For an accurate waist measurement, consider the measurement taken from the thinnest point of the waist, approximately one or two fingers above the belly button, in an upright position on a flat surface, without clothing, while breathing deeply, with a non-stretchable tape measure. )

Where Are We in Obesity?
In an increasingly developing country, we take care to grow by taking western culture as an example. This size is increasing not only in terms of the country's economy, politics or development, etc., but also in the direction of people trying to grow in terms of volume and fat. When the TURDEP-I study in 1998 and the TURDEP-II study in 2010 are compared, obesity in Turkey has increased by 44% in 12 years.
While we are so far into obesity, we must stop this trend and not make our bodies slave to obesity.
Now, we must evaluate our body sizes, take our place on the opposite front of obesity and declare war on obesity.
I wish a healthy future.
