Kissing disease is a disease caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).
EBV, a herpes group virus, is transmitted through body secretions.
Saliva
Blood
Transmission occurs through semen.
It is known that infection can develop as a result of organ transplantation.
The incubation period is 4-7 weeks.
The transmission period is long. . It begins during the incubation period and continues until 18 months.
Clinical symptoms;
-
Fever
-
In the lymph nodes growth
-
Exudation in the pharynx
-
It is characterized by growth in the liver and spleen.
The disease often goes unnoticed in infants and young children. Clinical symptoms appear as age increases and its course becomes severe in older ages. In developing societies, this disease is transmitted in early childhood. In developed societies, it is seen in adolescence.
EBV infection causes serious complications.
-
Inflammation in the liver
-
Anemia
-
Rupture in the spleen
-
Heart rhythm disturbance may occur.
In severe cases;
-
Inflammation of the heart muscle (Myocarditis)
-
Cerebral inflammation (Encephalitis) may develop.
After the kissing disease is transmitted, the virus remains in the body for life. In some people, the virus becomes active after years and signs of reactivation are observed.
EBV is associated with some lymph cancers. In immunocompromised patients, EBV can lead to lymphoma. It is also associated with Nasopharynx cancer in Eastern societies.

Diagnosis of the kiss disease
-
Clinical findings
-
Detected by blood tests.
And in necessary cases, abdominal USG to monitor liver and spleen size.
If the clinical picture of EBV disease improves within 1-3 months, this process may take up to 6 months in some cases.
Cases where symptoms last longer than 6 months are defined as chronic.
>It is not possible to distinguish whether the case is acute or chronic with laboratory examination.
There is no specific protocol for the treatment of kissing disease.
-
Bed rest
p> -
Plenty of fluid consumption
-
Oral care
-
Painkillers are recommended.
In special cases, cortisone treatment is applied.
In severe cases, antiviral treatment approach is used.
It is generally important for patients to avoid heavy activities for a few months.
As a result;
The kissing disease, which is extremely contagious,

It is a serious clinical picture.
-
It progresses as an asymptomatic infection in children under two years of age.
-
It is common in adolescence and the symptoms are typical.
-
>This virus remains in the body throughout life. It is not known when and how it will be activated.
-
Beta streptococcal infections often occur together in young people with EBV infection.
-
Treatment.
rest
Plenty of fluids
Protection from infections.
-
