Kissing disease is a disease caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).

EBV, a herpes group virus, is transmitted through body secretions.

Transmission occurs through semen.

It is known that infection can develop as a result of organ transplantation.

The incubation period is 4-7 weeks.

The transmission period is long. . It begins during the incubation period and continues until 18 months.

Clinical symptoms;

The disease often goes unnoticed in infants and young children. Clinical symptoms appear as age increases and its course becomes severe in older ages. In developing societies, this disease is transmitted in early childhood. In developed societies, it is seen in adolescence.

EBV infection causes serious complications.


 

In severe cases;

After the kissing disease is transmitted, the virus remains in the body for life. In some people, the virus becomes active after years and signs of reactivation are observed.

EBV is associated with some lymph cancers. In immunocompromised patients, EBV can lead to lymphoma. It is also associated with Nasopharynx cancer in Eastern societies.

If the clinical picture of EBV disease improves within 1-3 months, this process may take up to 6 months in some cases.

Cases where symptoms last longer than 6 months are defined as chronic.

There is no specific protocol for the treatment of kissing disease.

In special cases, cortisone treatment is applied.

In severe cases, antiviral treatment approach is used.

It is generally important for patients to avoid heavy activities for a few months.
