The Age of Depression Is Getting Smaller

Depression that you ignore or leave alone in your child causes problems that are very difficult to compensate for in the future. Has your child been acting irritable and angry lately? He constantly complains of tiredness, either doesn't eat at all or eats too much, can't sleep or doesn't know how to get up! Does it say 'There is a problem' but you cannot reach it despite all your efforts? Child and Youth Psychiatrist Dr. Özlem Şireli states that depression, the disease of the modern age, may have knocked on your child's door, in which case you should be very understanding and very careful.

DON'T LEAVE IT TO IT'S HAPPEN!

In children, When depression is ignored or left alone instead of being treated early, it can lead to very serious problems, from school problems to course failure, deterioration in social relationships, and self-destructive behaviors such as substance use and suicide attempts, especially towards adolescence.

The incidence has increased in adolescence!

Dr. states that depression increases especially during adolescence. Şireli states that the child who is depressed will experience sharp changes in his/her sleep patterns and will either be unable to sleep or will start to oversleep. He/she will also experience a similar decrease or increase in appetite. He says that the absence of the expected weight gain, especially in younger children, is an important clinical symptom. While physical complaints, especially headaches, are most common in children aged 6-8, abdominal pain may also be experienced more frequently as the age decreases.

Girls are more susceptible to the effects

Depression is a disease that occurs through the interaction of genetic, environmental and biological factors. Although it is seen at equal rates in boys and girls before adolescence, its prevalence in girls increases with adolescence. In the presence of such depressive symptoms in children, the family must seek help from a specialist. Treatment may include individual psychotherapy and, if necessary, medication.

Failure in classes

Dr. Şireli said, “The child who is depressed shows indifference and reluctance towards his lessons as well as his daily activities and social relations.” He stated that "The distraction and loss of concentration that occur due to depression also cause a decrease in the child's academic success."
