WHAT IS SINUSITIS?

Infections that develop in the cavities on our face, whose function is to moisten and filter the air, reduce the weight of our head and ensure the resonance of our voice, are generally called sinusitis, which means sinus infection. Sinusitis is evaluated differently depending on its location, duration, and the damage it causes inside the nose. and the treatment of each is different from each other.

WHAT WERE THE CAUSES OF SINUSITIS

In general, in order to get sinusitis, a blockage must occur. In other words, air should not be able to enter the sinus and the natural secretion formed in the sinus should not be evacuated. This is where a philosophical discussion is very important for the treatment plan. Eliminating the cause that impairs ventilation and ensuring a healthy breathing nasal structure often ensures that sinus infections disappear on their own. For this reason, the fact that sinusitis causes nasal congestion actually means that sinus infections can occur because the nose is blocked. What needs to be discussed here are the causes of nasal congestion and their treatment options. When viewed from this alternative perspective, most sinusitis cases can be completely treated. Except for some exceptional cases, success rates of 90% can be achieved.

The majority of sinusitis occurs due to bacterial infections. Bacteria accumulate on the natural secretion of the sinus mucosa, which cannot be ventilated due to the reasons mentioned above, and find a suitable environment to multiply. Over time, bacteria multiply in large numbers, making both the secretions of the sinus they are in dark, green and foul-smelling. They also cause thickening of the mucosa, formation of cysts and structural deterioration.

SINUSITIS SYMPTOMS WHAT ARE THEY?

Sinusitis symptoms can be observed in a wide range. There may be findings ranging from vague complaints such as weakness, fatigue, and mild headache, which the patient considers to be quite normal, to more severe complaints such as fever, runny nose, odor, cough, phlegm, etc.

These findings are generally very related to the cause of sinusitis. For example, in sinusitis due to allergic rhinitis, intense discharge, cough, itching in the eyes and nose can be observed, while in sinusitis due to curvatures in the nasal bone, only nasal congestion and headache may occur.

TREATMENT:

Addressing the cause when making a treatment plan always increases the chance of success. For this, the cause is first determined by radiological imaging. Then, the treatment is planned taking into account the patient's condition.

The treatment spectrum extends from antibiotic treatment to endoscopic functional sinus surgery.
