Brain Death

Brain death is the complete, irreversible loss of brain functions despite the support of the patient's heart, lungs and other organs.

It is important for families to understand this situation that their relatives are in and to make a decision about the option of organ donation, which can be life-giving for other people.

Brain death means the restoration of the functions of the brain, cerebellum and brainstem, where all vital centers are located. It is a state of irreversible extinction. Brain death does not mean the same thing as coma or vegetative state. Brain death refers to the state of medical death. In case of brain death, the heart, kidneys, lungs and liver continue to work for a limited time if respiratory and life support is provided. However, if these supports are stopped, all these organ functions will be lost in a short time. Recognizing and defining brain death is a critical process. It is of great importance to define brain death accurately, completely and in a timely manner.

NO ONE WOKE UP AFTER BRAIN DEATH WAS DECLARED

Under the terms coma and vegetative state, brainstem functions are impaired. There is evidence to show that it still exists. The person's breathing and possibly some organ functions are still under the control of the brain. However, in brain death, the brain has no function left. No one woke up after being declared brain dead. This misconception stems from the confusion between the terms coma and brain death in society. Once brain death is legally declared, it is an irreversible process. 'If he's dead, why is his heart still beating?' It may be asked: Even though the heart does not show brain functions, it continues to beat for a limited time when oxygen support is provided. Since this process is irreversible, the heart will eventually stop and dysfunction will develop in all organs. This period, from the moment the patient dies legally, medically and irreversibly, to the moment his heart stops, is a process in which organ donation can shed light on other people. Every organ donated and every transplant actually represents a life saved.

3 T DIAGNOSIS OF BRAIN DEATH THERE IS A SIGN OF EMEL

For a definitive diagnosis of brain death, there must be no available treatment for the diseases or processes that cause brain damage, or there must be unresponsiveness to all treatment attempts. The patient should not be under the influence of anesthetic drugs, agents that may affect the level of consciousness, electrolyte imbalances and metabolic disorders. In addition, after other medical requirements are met, the basic findings of brain death are evaluated. The three basic findings of the clinical diagnosis of brain death are deep coma, loss of brainstem reflexes and absence of breathing test.
