How Should Pregnant Women Sleep?

Who doesn't love sleep, right? Especially during pregnancy... Sleepiness is common in the first months due to hormonal changes brought about by pregnancy. At the beginning of pregnancy, your sleeping position is not very important. However, things change with the following weeks.

The sleeping position during pregnancy is very important not only for your comfort but also medically. Expectant mothers are concerned that the baby will get stuck and get hurt, especially in the face-down position. They think that they will crush the baby by lying on it. The face-down position does not harm the baby and should not be feared, thanks to the amniotic fluid surrounding the baby. You can sleep in any position you want until the 28th week. After the 6th month, you cannot be comfortable due to your growing belly and you do not prefer to sleep in the face-down position.

Sleeping on your back is harmful for the baby!

As the pregnancy progresses, the growing uterus and your growing belly, the mother's It puts pressure on the main vessels (arteries and veins) running along the spine. Especially in the last months, when this weight, which can reach up to 6 kilograms with the baby, puts pressure on the mother's veins that return it to the heart, the blood returning to the heart decreases and causes the mother's blood pressure to drop. This makes the mother feel faint and this is called supine hypotensive syndrome. Another bad consequence of this is that since the blood going to the uterus will also decrease, the blood going to the baby will decrease. For this reason, it is necessary to avoid sleeping completely on your back.

While you do not need to lie on your left or right side, lying with your stomach turned to the side even slightly will reduce this pressure. Because it is not possible to sleep in the same position all the time and it is normal to turn over throughout the night. The left side sleeping position is the most recommended sleeping position. In this position, the blood flow to the baby increases and since the urine will be more easily filtered through the mother's kidneys, edema and swelling in the hands, feet and ankles will decrease.

Anatomically, the uterus is slightly turned to the right, and if you lie on your left side, the pressure created by the uterus will decrease. It will be extra relaxing. But this does not mean sleeping on the left side all the time because it may disrupt your comfort. Just dropping your belly to the side is enough. When you fall asleep, you can put a pillow on the side of your back so that you do not roll over onto your back without realizing it. Bend one or both knees You can also turn on your side and place a pillow between your legs and under your abdomen. You may benefit from pregnancy-specific pillows.

Increasing body weight may cause snoring and sleep apnea if you sleep on your back.

As a result; As the pregnancy progresses, you should avoid sleeping in the back position and prefer side sleeping positions!
