Skin Blemishes

Skin blemishes are a nightmare for all of us. Different types of spots can occur for various reasons, especially on our face. Skin spots occur when the melanin pigment, which gives the skin its color, is produced more than normal. The most important trigger of stain formation is sunlight. Except this; Genetic predisposition, hormonal reasons such as pregnancy, drug use (such as birth control pills) and diseases that cause inflammation in the skin are the main causes of blemish formation.

Blemish types are melasma (pregnancy mask), freckles, solar lentigo (age spots). can be grouped as congenital spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (spots resulting from inflammation on the skin).

The patient with the blemish problem should first be examined by a dermatologist. The patient's age, gender, and the presence of any accompanying disease or medication use are questioned. The stained area is first examined in daylight. Afterwards, in order to evaluate the depth of the stain more clearly, it is examined under blue wavelength ultraviolet light, which we call wood lamp.

Blemish treatment varies depending on the type and depth of the stain. The first step in spot treatment is effective protection from the sun. Exposure to direct sunlight at noon should be avoided and sunscreen creams should be used regularly. Sunscreens should be applied half an hour before going out and should be renewed every 2-4 hours if exposure continues. Sunscreen should be reapplied after swimming and drying. Sunglasses and a hat should also be used.

In spot treatment; Blemish lightening creams, chemical peeling, enzymatic peeling, lasers, and blemish mesotherapy are used effectively. It is more appropriate to perform spot treatment in winter, when the sun does not have harmful effects.

In some patients, spots may recur after effective treatment. For this reason, even after spot treatment is completed, effective protection from sunlight should be continued.
