HUMECTANTS
They are water-soluble substances with high water retention properties. They have the ability to attract water from the epidermis and the atmosphere (if the humidity in the atmosphere is more than 80%).
Humektans can help moisturize the skin by absorbing water from the environment, and they can also increase the dryness of the skin in low humidity environments by withdrawing water from the deep epidermis and dermis. Therefore, they are more effective when combined with occlusives.
Humectants cause slight swelling in the stratum corneum by drawing water into the skin. Thus, they provide a flatter and smoother appearance on the skin. Although the anti-wrinkle effect is not permanent in the long term, creams marketed as anti-wrinkle mostly show this effect because they contain humectants.
