Anxiety is a person's psychological and physical reaction to a frightening or threatening situation. Anxiety, which is functional for our survival in human life because it reveals the fight, flight or freeze reactions, was a great protective factor for humans who encountered a herd, especially in the primitive period. However, none of us encounter a wolf pack today. Our reactions to an uncertain situation create our concerns. Anxiety reactions are reactions that exist for every person, but if they start to significantly affect our lives, disrupt them and cause discomfort, we can talk about an anxiety disorder.
With hours left before the exam, I want to talk about test anxiety, which is a subtype of anxiety.
WOW! THERE IS AN EXAM TOMORROW
Do you think that if I fail this exam, my life will be ruined? Or do you never believe you study enough before exams? Do you have physical symptoms such as heart palpitations, sweating, dizziness and nausea during the exam? Do you experience emotional symptoms such as panicking, crying, or tension every time before the exam? Do you think what the world will say if I fail this exam? Do you feel like you can't sleep or lose your appetite when you think about the exam?
Exams are a tool that measures what we know and don't know academically, but they cannot measure everything. Having negative prejudices about the exam and constantly producing thoughts about bad results makes us feel more under pressure and makes us feel stuck. You may be thinking, "Is success measured by an exam? This is unfair," but these rumors will only prevent you from concentrating, and will prevent the real information from being retrieved by settling in the short-term and long-term memory from which we recall the information. What if I get questions that I don't know at all, I may have floating thoughts about myself and the exam, as if I had failed my exams before. Sayings like, "I'm already an anxious person, what will I tell my family if I don't win?", "I can't do it," are your thoughts about yourself. Fear of embarrassment and fear of judgment will increase stress and panic.
The human mind is very good at focusing on the negative. Even if we have certain goals and expectations for ourselves, negative experiences and failures are remembered more. Especially in the pre-exam period, we focus on our missing subjects and reinforce this behaviorally.
Especially lately, the question of what I am good at gives you courage. Focusing on the aspects you have completed instead of seeing the aspects you are missing will give you confidence. So, the list of incomplete topics is in the trash, the list of completed topics is on the shelves. ☺
Knowing that you are not experiencing this experience alone, that it is a common human experience is another important point for anxiety. You have many peers just like you who are experiencing all the physical and emotional symptoms you experienced during the exam. When you accept that test anxiety is a natural part of daily life or accept that anxiety exists instead of ignoring it, no matter how difficult this feeling is for you, you will be able to look at it without running away from the difficult feeling. When we experience negative emotions such as stress, strain or anxiety and wonder why am I experiencing this, we don't want to experience this, there is a mountain of anxiety walking beside us without realizing it. But yes, it is also very important to accept that this situation is challenging for you, such as "I'm having a hard time right now, I feel anxiety about the exam result." It will be very helpful for you to have a more self-compassionate attitude instead of criticizing or blaming yourself when negative thoughts come one after another.
The main purpose of education is to educate individuals instead of passive, receptive individuals; Isn't it about raising active participants, individuals who question, criticize, are sensitive to differences, can make their own decisions, are fair and tolerant, and know exactly what they want to do today by building a bridge between the past and the future?
Remember, you don't have to do everything flawlessly or perfectly. If you ignore the possibility of making mistakes, you may run into trouble in the things you can do really well by trying to be error-free.
The biggest cause of exam stress is actually related to anxiety about the exam result based on performance. its ge Throughout the exam, remember that you will die and that you are here and now.
Breathing exercises are short-term but very functional methods during the exam. A 5-repeat breathing exercise by placing your hand on your abdomen, quickly inhaling through the nose and slowly exhaling through the mouth, will both reduce your anxiety symptoms and calm your stress.
Thank yourselves, young people.
Remember, no exam can measure the value you give to yourself, there is something I hear a lot from you, teacher, what if I fail to graduate, I cannot pass, I have to prepare again.....
One year spent in a person's life for himself should not be perceived as too bad.
Instead of trying to get into a place just for the sake of it, the effort to find a school that truly meets your wishes is not in vain. No road is the last exit before the bridge.
Your families, who are with you and accompany you under all circumstances, are aware of this. Be an actor of your own life, not a spectator.
Live freely, as much as you can.
I wish you well on the exam day.
