Parabens; It is a preservative that has been used in medicine and cosmetics all over the world since 1924 due to its antimicrobial effect. On May 31, 2010, the European Medicines Agency announced that parabens used in medicines do not have carcinogenic or poisonous effects. On May 26, 2011, the Scientific Committee of the Ministry of Health met and made a statement regarding "Paraben". The decisions of this board are as follows.
“Parabens have effects similar to the estrogen hormone in the human body. The effectiveness of methylparaben, which is most commonly used in medicine and cosmetics, is 2 million 500 thousand times that of the same amount of estrogen. For this reason, parabens found in drugs and cosmetics are considered to have no estrogenic effects and are not expected to have carcinogenic or endocrine disrupting effects. When parabens are used in medicines and cosmetics and taken into the body, they break down very quickly and are eliminated from the body. When taken orally, they break down quickly due to the acidic environment in the stomach and the amount that passes into the blood is almost negligible. There is no proven scientific data showing that paraben accumulates in the body to such an extent that it has a toxic effect and that it directly causes cancer in humans. In our country, drugs are licensed if their contents and additives (including parabens) are in accordance with the legislation before they are put into clinical use.” Iron mineral has many important functions in the healthy growth of the child, especially in brain and intelligence development in the first three years of life. Since iron deficiency anemia is common in our country, iron mineral supplementation is started in all our children in prophylaxis, that is, in protective doses, starting from the 4th month. Since I, as a physician, have seen many cases of iron deficiency anemia in the first two years of my life in my clinical experience, I think that iron prophylaxis should be used and I used it for my son until he was two years old.
