Since babies cannot talk or explain their problems, they express themselves and communicate with their mothers by crying. Sometimes they cry so much that parents and caregivers are confused about what to do and are helpless. They find themselves in the emergency room.
In the first weeks after birth. Babies cry 2-3 hours a day and sleep 17-18 hours. This crying time gradually increases in 6-8 weeks. In the first weeks and months, some babies cannot distinguish between night and day, so they sleep during the day and stay awake at night and cry. Here, it must be ensured that they distinguish between day and night. .
After a certain period of time, the mother can understand why her baby is crying, whether he is hungry, gassy, sick, or has soiled his diaper. Sometimes there may be situations that he does not understand.
Reasons for crying:
-Reflux
-Gas pain-infantile colic
-Infection
-Hunger
-Central nervous system diseases (meningitis, anomaly, bleeding etc.)
-Constipation
-Cow's milk allergy
The most common of these are gas pain and infantile colic. Gas pain usually lasts 10-15 days. It starts on the 40th day. It gradually increases and peaks on the 40th day. It then decreases and goes away on its own in the 3rd month. In case of colic, this period may be longer.
Infantile colic, especially in babies between 1-4 months, does not have any underlying organic cause. It is defined as long-term crying spells that are difficult to soothe without help. It always occurs at the same time during the day. It cannot be prevented or soothed by the mother or caregiver. It is repetitive and lasts for hours. There is no developmental delay, fever, or signs of illness in the baby. Apart from the seizures, the baby is comfortable. p>
Treatment includes anti-gas medications, massage, relieving the mother and father's anxiety, and adjusting the baby's nutrition.
