The car breaks down, the person gets sick...

Hello, as a specialist physician working in the field of child and youth psychiatry, I will now share my knowledge and experience with you every week in Balance. While I was thinking about where to start, I wanted to start from the basics, from our society's perspective on psychiatry and psychiatric diseases.

Our children have the right to have their mental health deteriorated, just like all of us...

In fact, being sick means It is a natural consequence of being alive. What does this mean? No car can be sick, it can only break down. A living being only has the ability to become sick. We all know this fact and when our stomach and kidneys are sick, we often consult doctors, but when it comes to what is happening in our brain and our spiritual structure, we forget this fact, unfortunately, different social prejudices prevent this fact as we know it.

Prejudices waste time...

Whether it is a child or an adult, we think, 'Did we have a psychiatrist in our time? My child has nothing wrong, it will go away with time.' Unfortunately, the opposite usually happens, and the longer you wait, the more problems increase. We only start looking for solutions when psychiatric disorders significantly affect family life, studies, and friendships. Most of the time we are late. Many psychological problems, the seeds of which are sown in early childhood, can only be treated in adolescence. When it is late, both the effectiveness of the treatment decreases and the duration of treatment becomes longer.

If it is late, basic beliefs and attitudes are affected…

And we are unlucky enough to have never had the chance for treatment. There are individuals. These individuals apply the negative behaviors they inherited from their childhood (violence is the most classic example) to their children and loved ones. In this way, psychiatric problems are transmitted from generation to generation. Let's be ourselves, know that mental illnesses are a consequence of being human, and apply early. Best wishes…
