What is Breast Biopsy and How is It Done?

Breast biopsies are the removal of pieces of suspicious areas detected by imaging methods for microscopic examination.

Under the guidance of radiological methods (ultrasound, mammography or magnetic resonance), a sufficient amount of tissue is collected by the radiologist in a way that causes the least harm to the patient. It is taken with appropriately selected needles.

The duty of the radiologist in a situation requiring histopathological diagnosis is; It is to choose and apply the biopsy method that is least harmful to the patient and provides the most information to the pathologist.

Bypsy applications in breast diseases are frequently performed in the following cases;

1, Breast Ultrasonography, Mammography or In clarifying the diagnosis and determining the cell subtype in the presence of a cancer detected by MRI examinations
2, In cases where it is detected by other imaging methods but it is not clear whether it is breast cancer,
3, In cases that have been previously detected and followed up in the breast In case the mass grows, changes in shape, or changes in the internal structure of the mass are observed,
4, In case a pathology that was previously thought to be a cyst later changes its character,
Even if the mass can be detected manually from the outside, the biopsy must be accompanied by ultrasonography to be safer. Breast biopsy is a situation that creates anxiety in women, but getting information from the Radiologist who will perform the procedure before the procedure will reduce the tension.

Preparations to be made before the biopsy;

Findings after the procedure are reported as benign, suspicious (atypical) or malignant.

Needle biopsies, ultrasonography, mammography ( stereotaxic method) or under MRI guidance. Ultrasonography is preferred for both the patient and the physician because it does not involve radiation and the needle can be constantly monitored on the screen.

The biopsy of findings seen only in mammography is performed with stereotaxic method under mammography guidance, and the biopsy of findings detected only in MRI is performed under MRI guidance.
