WHAT IS Orthognathic Surgery?

The orthodontic problem is not limited to the apposition of the teeth. This time, the irregular development of the jaw bones has also been added to the problem. This irregular development is extreme. It disrupts the person's social life and, unfortunately, also affects their psychology. At this point, the collaboration between orthodontics and surgery begins.
Orthognathic Adjustments are made to the jaw bones with surgery. Plastic surgeons or jaw surgery specialists perform the surgical operation. The end of growth and development is expected for the operation (around 18-20 years of age).
Stages of orthognathic surgery
Clinical examination: Detailed examination of patients who will undergo orthognathic surgery. A general evaluation is made. Records including x-rays, photographs and plaster models are taken from the patient and cephalometric analysis is performed on these records. This is followed by a medical evaluation and it is evaluated whether there is any obstacle to surgery or general anesthesia.
Pre-surgical orthodontic treatment: Your doctor applies the treatment in line with the determined plan and ensures the alignment of the lower and upper teeth. This stage may take an average of 2 years depending on the severity of the patient's anomaly. At the end of this period, a cephalometric film is taken again. If necessary, a tomography is requested. As a result of the studies and analyzes made on the new measurements and films, it is calculated how many mm and in which direction the teeth and jaw bones will be moved. The new plan and two splints are sent to the surgeon. Splints are the surgeon's guides during surgery.
Surgical operation: Under general anesthesia, the jaws are brought to the desired position by the surgeon. After the operation, the patient stays in the hospital for approximately 3-5 days and then the patient is discharged.
Post-surgical orthodontic treatment: The final post-surgical corrections are completed by the orthodontist and the treatment is completed by removing the patient's brackets within 1-3 months.
