The Relationship Between Angina Pectoris and Toothache

Angina pectoris is the feeling of discomfort or pain that occurs due to the heart muscle not being able to provide the oxygen it needs and is relieved with rest or anti-ischemic drugs such as nitrates.

Typical angino pectoris; It occurs during psychological or physical stress and is felt as a short-term squeezing pain in the chest (lasting between 30 seconds and 15 minutes). The pain can spread to the chest, left arm, shoulders, neck, jaw and even lower teeth. It is often accompanied by complaints such as shortness of breath, blurred vision or nausea.

The main causes are smoking, atherosclerosis, coronary artery spasm, high cholesterol and advanced age. Patients describe the pain as "There is a weight as if someone is sitting on my chest." Except for pain, the patient has no objective or subjective symptoms. However, Angino pectoris pain can be confused with toothache because it hits the lower jaw and teeth. When you experience similar complaints and go to your dentist or medical doctor, they can distinguish whether the source of the pain is angino pectoris or dental origin.

It is necessary to avoid factors that provoke pain in the patient with angina. The most important aspect of angino pectoris in terms of dentistry is that it can occur due to reasons such as sadness, excitement, stress. It is necessary to be cautious when giving an indication for intervention or extraction to a patient with suspected angino pectoris. It should be remembered that extraction or intervention can provoke an angina attack. As a precaution, if it is decided that surgical procedures such as tooth extraction, periodontal surgery or implant applications are possible, a coronary vasodilator should be given before the intervention. Local anesthesia should be given slowly, preferably without adrenaline.

Patients with cardiovascular disease must inform the physician about this issue during the dentist examination. It is also beneficial for them to have sublingual tablets with them before surgical interventions. However, every conscious physician will take the necessary precautions for emergencies.

Sa I wish you a healthy day.
