What is Phimosis?

The foreskin is attached to the head of the penis. It is a normal condition, it is present in 96% of newborn babies. However, since this adhesion narrows the opening at the end of the foreskin, it makes it difficult for the baby to urinate and may cause infection. It is wrong for families to try to open this up. This physiological adhesion will open on its own over time. The inner surface secretions of the foreskin and occasional spontaneous erections in the baby will ensure opening. Dilation is completed when puberty is completed.

In babies who are dilated, the normally secreted fluid leaks out in very small amounts. It is not possible to see or notice this. However, in some babies, stenosis does not allow this fluid to flow. Liquid accumulates inside. Later, this liquid thickens and becomes cheese-like. Cheese-like structures come together to form cysts. It can be seen externally as swelling. (During the circumcision process, we open the stenosis and remove the cheese-like formations).

The ending can result in two important situations.

First of all, it can cause serious stenosis and cause problems in the baby's urination. Families may notice that the baby has difficulty, writhes or cries while peeing. It can be seen that the penis of some babies is swollen and almost ballooned. If not properly monitored and treated, it may cause serious damage. The complete and permanent treatment is circumcision.

The second is the inflammation of the cheesy formations. The foreskin becomes red, swollen and there is a yellow watery discharge from the penis. The baby becomes restless and cannot pee comfortably. In this case, treatment with medications and creams can be tried first, but the permanent and complete treatment is circumcision.

The bit should never be tried to peel back. When forced backwards, it sits in the groove below the glans and can block blood flow to the penis, causing gangrene and organ loss. It is a very important situation and requires urgent intervention.
