We always portray anxiety as "a bad thing." Anxiety is actually our alarm mechanism against threats in our environment. It is an element that will enable us to be vigilant against situations that may harm us evolutionarily.
It is necessary for our survival. However, here we need to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy anxiety.
While healthy anxiety comes into play when there is a realistic danger situation, unhealthy anxiety can be thought of as the continuous sounding of the alarm mechanism and its failure as a result, in cases where there is no danger. Imagine the presence of an alarm that keeps ringing in your head. How annoying is that? This alarm mechanism, which comes into play when there is no danger, makes the person very uncomfortable and can become a problem that you have difficulty in coping with. However, anxiety warns us of potential disasters and serves to take action to avert danger, or at least prepare for it. So how do we decide whether or not to worry about a situation we actually face? Let's take a look together.
First of all, when we encounter a situation that will cause us anxiety and the alarm mechanism starts to trigger, we should pay attention and ask ourselves: What are the signs that I am in danger, is there evidence of this? Our minds will usually try to convince us of the existence of these signs, in which case we can look at ourselves from the outside and try to find more rational alternative arguments. For example, imagine that your situation happened to a friend and you gave him advice. What would you say to your friend? The arguments you will likely find will ease your anxiety and help you develop a different perspective on the situation.
Considering that our thoughts, feelings and behaviors trigger each other, these changes in our thinking system will change our emotions and therefore our behaviors. These tips are the key to feeling better.
