Can Allergic Rhinitis and Covid 19 Be Mixed?

Opr. Dr. Yusuf Şentürk said, "Allergic Rhinitis (allergic flu) is one of the leading diseases that can be seen in all seasons and geographical conditions, regardless of age, gender, socioeconomic conditions, and can be confused with Covid 19 and other viral upper respiratory tract infections due to its symptoms."

Medicana Samsun Hospital Ear Nose Throat (ENT) Diseases Specialist Opr. Dr. Yusuf Şentürk gave information about confusing the symptoms with covit-19 symptoms during the covit-19 epidemic.

Op.Dr. Yusuf Şentük “Pollens spread into the atmosphere in the spring and easily reach our mouth, nose, eyes and lungs. Especially after windy weather, allergic complaints increase as pollen is dispersed more into the air. Allergic rhinitis constitutes approximately 40% of allergic diseases. The outer surface of buildings attracts pollen due to static electricity charge, so exposure to the disease and symptoms intensify in living areas surrounded by tall buildings. On the other hand, since there is very little pollen at the seaside, the symptoms of allergic rhinitis are relieved through breathing. The organs that allergens reach most frequently and easily are the nose, eyes and lungs. "As a result, allergic diseases such as allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis and asthma occur."

ALLERGIC RHINITIS AND COVIT-19 SYMPTOMS

In allergic rhinitis, nasal congestion, discharge, sneezing, postnasal drip, nasal itching, watery eyes, itching and redness may occur. While in the lungs, there are symptoms such as increased secretion, cough, wheezing and shortness of breath. "Since these symptoms can also be seen in viral upper respiratory tract infections, especially Covid-19, they can be confused with allergic rhinitis. In Covid-19, there may be sore throat, dry cough, chills, weakness, muscle and joint pain, loss of taste and smell, and especially high fever, and sometimes nasal congestion and discharge may occur. However, there is no sneezing and nasal itching as in allergic rhinitis, and fever is not observed in allergic rhinitis. In allergic rhinitis, it is important to determine the allergen by performing allergy tests. "Covid 19 is diagnosed with a nasopharyngeal swab test," he said.

ALLERGIC TREATMENT AND PREVENTION WAYS FOR RHINITIS

Medicana Samsun Hospital Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) Diseases Specialist Opr. Dr. Yusuf Şentürk listed the ways of protection as follows;

The basic method is to stay away from the allergen, as in all allergic diseases. For this, first the substances that cause allergy must be determined. In cases where it is not possible to stop contact with allergens, which is usually not the case, the disease can be controlled with drug treatments.

– Do not smoke and do not let anyone drink with you.

– Do not be in dusty and pollen environments, if you must be there. Use a mask.

– Keep your doors and windows closed in your home and workplace during the seasons when pollen is flying. Try to stay at home in windy weather

– Apply a thin layer of Vaseline around the nostrils and eyes. Pollens stick to vaseline and thus their entry into the body can be prevented.

–Take a shower at home without delay, as pollen also rains on you in rainy weather.

– Change the filters used in air conditioners every month, use special filters that retain allergens.

– Pay attention to your body cleanliness, wash your hands and face regularly.

– Do not dry your clothes outdoors during the pollen season.

– Close the windows when traveling in a car during the pollen season. keep it.
