When a pregnancy test should be done?

The first thing that comes to mind when menstruation is delayed is the possibility of pregnancy. When is pregnancy determined? Which test and when will allow us to reach the correct result? Questions and curiosities such as these are answered by Gynecology and Obstetrics Specialist Assoc. Dr. Kerem Doğa Seçkin explained it for you...

When should the pregnancy test be done?

Pregnancy test is recommended for people who have their periods on time every month and do not have menstrual irregularities. It can be done at any time following the delay. However, it is not easy to give clear information about the history of women experiencing menstrual irregularities. After the pregnancy material (embryo) settles on the uterine wall, the pregnancy test becomes positive in the blood, thanks to the presence of the ßHCG hormone, which begins to rise in the blood, and later on, after this hormone is eliminated from the blood and passes into the urine, the pregnancy test becomes positive. This hormone, which first begins to rise in the blood, then passes into the urine, allowing tests to be performed with urine kits. Over the years, both tests have improved and their sensitivity rate has become higher. It has made the detection of pregnancy possible with a high accuracy rate without going to a doctor. This has made pregnancy detection very easy and advantageous for women.

Menstrual irregularity may affect the test results.

Menstrual irregularity may affect the test results in women. It is seen frequently. In fact, sometimes women are not aware of their pregnancy due to menstrual irregularities. Menstrual irregularities, especially those experienced before menopause, are a period in which many surprises occur in women's lives. In addition, women who have ovulation laziness and irregular menstrual cycles and cannot become pregnant easily cannot realize that they are pregnant due to these menstrual irregularities. In women with menstrual irregularities, a pregnancy test may be positive just before or after a menstrual delay. While a blood pregnancy test is more sensitive and can detect pregnancy immediately after a menstrual delay, tests performed with urine kits may not be as sensitive and detect pregnancy in the early period. Tests performed by donating blood are more reliable at this stage. Although very rare, testing It may give false positive results in women who are not pregnant. In other words, even if there is no pregnancy, these tests can rarely give positive results. However, these results can be reconfirmed with blood tests and determined to be inaccurate. After this, the unnecessary pressure and psychological stress on the woman can be easily eliminated.

What is the difference between blood and urine tests?

As we mentioned before, both urine and urine tests are Pregnancy tests can be done using both sample and blood tests. Seeing double lines in urine tests, that is, a positive pregnancy test, can also be seen approximately immediately after the expected date of menstruation. However, it can be detected more precisely one week after the expected menstrual date. Therefore, if the test is to be performed using urine kits, performing it 3-7 days after the menstrual delay will ensure a positive result with an accuracy of over 90%. Pregnancy tests performed by giving blood can be performed in the first days (1-7 days) following a menstrual delay and can give positive results with a high accuracy rate. For these reasons, both methods can detect pregnancy status with precision in women with suspected pregnancy. If people with suspicion of pregnancy do not have time to donate blood or transportation to a health institution, it would be appropriate to first check their pregnancy status with more easily accessible urine tests. If this test is negative and the suspicion still persists, confirmation with a blood test would be an appropriate option.
