Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) is performed by placing a mini ultrasonography device that emits and records sound waves at the end of the devices called endoscopes, which are used in digestive system endoscopy.
With EUS, the interior of the organs is entered and thus the images are much clearer. It is taken closely and in detail, whereas standard ultrasonography takes images that are much more distant and provide less detail since it is performed through the skin (transcutaneous).
In this way, not only diseases of the inner surface of the digestive system are diagnosed during endoscopy, Images of diseases originating from other lower layers (submucosal) are obtained and biopsies can be taken if necessary.
Since EUS shows the wall layers in the digestive system in detail, it is used in the staging of tumors occurring in the digestive system or in organs adjacent to the digestive system (size and depth of the tumor). It is used to examine lesions located under the epithelium in the digestive system (e.g., lymph node and neighboring organ metastasis, etc.).
It is a very helpful method, especially in the evaluation of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas and bile ducts, and is more effective than other imaging methods, depending on the location. is superior. With EUS, tissue samples can be taken from tumors originating from the digestive system and organs adjacent to the digestive system, cysts, etc. formations can be evacuated.
EUS indications
-
Evaluation of lesions seen in the esophagus, stomach, duodenum and rectum wall with endoscopic and radiological methods
-
Staging of esophageal tumors
-
Staging of stomach tumors
-
Evaluation and biopsy of mediastinal masses and lymph nodes
-
Evaluation of patients with obstructive jaundice
-
Staging of pancreatic cancers
-
Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors localization
-
Evaluation of cystic neoplasms of the pancreas and cyst aspiration
-
Celiac plexus neurolysis
-
Staging of chronic pancreatitis
-
Diagnosis of cholelithiais and choledochollithisis
-
Staging of rectal cancers
-
Evaluation of internal and external anal sphincters
How is EUS performed?
The EUS procedure is no different from classical endoscopy. EUS can be performed in both the upper (esophagus, stomach and duodenum) and lower digestive tract (large intestine). In EUS, the preparation before the procedure, the points to be considered after the procedure, and the possible side effects related to the procedure are no different from those in classical endoscopy.
