Research shows that the biggest reason for eating more than our basic needs is 75% of our emotional state. Emotions mixed with hunger, such as anger, guilt, loneliness, inadequacy, anxiety. Although this emotion that is tried to be suppressed varies from person to person, almost everyone experiences the Eating Cycle in a similar way.
The Emotional Eating Cycle works briefly as follows;
-
The person experiences a negative feeling. feels emotion. For example, he may be going through anxious days, he is under stress, he is unhappy, he has exam anxiety. Or the person is not aware of this negative feeling and just feels empty.
-
The person eats to suppress this negative feeling and to be happy. This is generally a carbohydrate and sugary food.
-
Consumption of food creates a short-term feeling of satisfaction, pleasure and happiness. This feeling lasts for about 5 minutes at most.
-
But then the person goes back to the beginning again, whatever the feeling that pushed him to the act of eating, and in addition to this feeling, negative feelings such as regret and guilt. is faced with an emotion.
In fact, many people can notice this cycle and identify its stages. But the most important thing is to be able to discover the underlying reasons that drag the person into this cycle. Because the main reason for diets that start with ongoing great desires and are abandoned before being completed, weights lost and regained, is not discovering the emotional reasons that push you to eating behavior.
So how can you deal with this after realizing your emotional eating cycle? For this, you can read my article titled Ways to Cope with Emotional Eating, which is the last and 4th step of the Emotional Eating series.
