ORAL HYGIENE

Ensuring oral hygiene by the patient
Unfortunately, the use of toothbrush and toothpaste is not common throughout Turkey. Maintaining oral hygiene during and after dental treatments is very important for the continuity of the treatments. In fact, while it is ideal to take care of your mouth by brushing your teeth or gargling after every meal, your teeth should be brushed at least after breakfast and after your last meal at bedtime. Apart from these, it is necessary to floss the spaces between the teeth once a day or, if there are gaps between the teeth, an interdental brushing should be done depending on the width of the gaps. If the patient has more than one caries or restoration in his mouth, the patient is in the high caries risk group. Such patients should use fluoride mouthwash three times a day, and the toothpaste they use must be fluoridated.
Oral hygiene should be ensured by a physician
Patients in the high caries risk group would also benefit from professional fluoride application every 6 months or fluoride varnish application every 3-6 months. Fluoride varnish is also good for tooth sensitivity. Among pediatric patients, those in the high-risk group should be subjected to professional fluoride application.
All of these were effective in protecting against caries and gum diseases. Apart from these, in order to protect the health of the gums, everyone should come to the dentist every 6 months and have their teeth cleaned. Although tartar formation may be more in some individuals and less in others, it can be prevented by frequent tooth brushing. Surgery may be required in patients with advanced gum disease. The physician makes this decision after clinical and radiological examination.
After dental cleaning, Teeth whitening can also be performed on patients, which is a completely different process than cleaning. The whitening process is successful on spontaneously yellow teeth, teeth that have not been whitened before, and brown stains. Although it has less chance of success, it is useful in cases of gray discoloration due to tetracycline or other diseases or medications. After whitening, tooth color will never be the same even if you drink tea, coffee or smoke. It may need to be whitened again after a certain period of time. There are two types of whitening: home or office whitening. In the home method, the person applies the whitening gel to a transparent plate and applies it to his mouth. The doctor applies the so-called office type method in the patient chair, the procedure takes less time and is more practical. However, in cases where the application of a retractor to the mouth is not tolerated by the patient, patients may prefer the home type.
After whitening, the fillings in the patient's mouth can be changed after waiting 2 weeks and reaching the final color. It would be better if laminate or porcelain restorations are made according to this final color.
In the first 2 weeks after whitening, it would be appropriate not to consume colored drinks (such as coffee, red wine, cherry juice) as water and dyes in the mouth will be absorbed into the tooth.
