Op. Dr. Mustafa Duran said, "Diabetic patients may experience permanent vision loss and eye damage if their eye health checks are late."
Diabetes, also known as diabetes, can affect the whole body and cause great damage to the eyes. Medicana Samsun Hospital Ophthalmology Specialist Op. Dr. Mustafa Duran gave detailed information about the treatment process and precautions.
“BLOOD SUGAR CONTROL IS VERY IMPORTANT”
Op. Dr. Mustafa Duran stated that diabetes is a disease that occurs as a result of disruption of blood sugar (glucose) metabolism in the body and said, “As a result of high glucose levels, disorders begin in the body vessels. This causes eye, kidney and cardiovascular system diseases. One of the most important causes of vision loss between the ages of 20 and 65 is diabetes. Diabetes causes eye diseases such as cataracts, high eye pressure, and diabetic retinopathy, which progress with bleeding and edema behind the eye. The risk of eye damage increases in proportion to the duration of diabetes and the high level of glucose in the blood. "Blood sugar control is very important in the treatment of eye damage (retinopathy) caused by diabetes," he said.
DO NOT BE LATE FOR TREATMENT
Eye Diseases Specialist Op. Dr. Mustafa Duran said, “In the early stages, micro aneurysms (ballooning in the vessel) and small bleeding are observed due to deterioration in the retinal vessels. In cases where the visual center is not affected, the patient does not have any complaints because vision is not affected, but this early period can be caught with routine eye examinations and preventive measures can be taken before progression. If these leaks in the retinal vessels affect the visual center, complaints of decreased vision begin. During this period, macular OCT and eye angiography (FFA) films are taken and the results are evaluated. Accordingly, intraocular (intravitreal) anti-VEGF injections or argon laser treatment is decided. In some cases, both treatments are applied together. If treatment is delayed, retinal vascular occlusions, extensive intraocular hemorrhage (vitreous hemorrhage) and fibrotic bands occur in the retina. During this period, patients' vision decreases further. At these stages, in addition to needle and laser treatments, vitrectome is applied to the back of the eye. The surgeries we mentioned are performed. "Permanent vision loss and eye damage may occur in patients who are delayed," he said.
CHECKS SHOULD NOT BE DISCONTINUED
In order to prevent eye disorders due to diabetes and to prevent the patient from losing vision, diabetic patients should have an eye examination after diagnosis and in line with the recommendations of the ophthalmologist for 6 months. or they need to go for their annual check-ups.
