What is the Rotator Sleeve?
It is the structure that surrounds the humeral head like a sheath, formed by the tendons of the muscles (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis, teres minor) that play an important role in shoulder joint movements and stabilize the shoulder.
What are the symptoms of a rotator cuff tear?
Pain: It is usually on the outer part of the arm, and can spread from the neck to the elbow. Pain in the forearm and hand is rare. The pain is usually in the form of overhead movements of the arm, arm turning movements and night pain.
Restriction of movement: There is a decrease in the overhead movement of the arm and the movement of extending our hand to our back, which we call internal rotation. Some patients cannot lift their arm at all.
Noise coming from the shoulder: Clicking and clicking sounds are heard during shoulder movements.
How is Rotator Cuff Tear Diagnosed?
Diagnosis of rotator cuff tear begins with the patient's history and physical examination. Shoulder radiographs and ultrasound examination may be performed. An MRI examination is requested for definitive diagnosis and detailed examination.
What is the Treatment for Rotator Cuff Tears?
It consists of rest, anti-inflammatory treatment, exercise and physical therapy. Surgical treatment is performed in patients whose complaints persist despite this treatment and in patients with full-thickness wide tears and/or accompanying shoulder impingement syndrome.
How is Surgical Treatment Done?
Although open surgery is performed, the current one is the closed, or arthroscopic, surgery method. This method, which we call shoulder arthroscopy, is a method in which three small incisions are made on the shoulder, the shoulder joint is monitored in detail on the screen using an imaging system, camera and lens system, and the detected tears and other pathologies are repaired using special hand tools.
