The most important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases is high blood pressure. Every year, many people lose their lives in the world and in our country due to damage caused by hypertension. Although great success has been achieved in the world regarding hypertension, there is still a long way to go.
The general tendency among people and healthcare personnel is to measure blood pressure from one arm. The most important reason for this is the time pressure created by the intense patient flow. However, many studies show that it is important to measure blood pressure in both arms. Especially in newly diagnosed hypertension patients, blood pressure should be measured in both arms.
So why is it necessary to measure blood pressure in both arms? Studies have shown that cardiovascular diseases are more common in people with a high blood pressure difference between both arms. It is claimed that atherosclerosis is much more common, especially in people with a difference of 10 mmHg between both arms, that is, more than one difference in common parlance.
By taking some time for physicians or healthcare personnel to measure blood pressure in both arms, it can be determined whether there is a risk of arteriosclerosis. In particular, patients with a difference of more than 20 mmHg, or in other words more than two points, should be examined in detail and the reasons for this difference should be investigated. On the other hand, patients with a difference of 10 mmHg, that is, one point, should be closely monitored for cardiovascular disease.
