Does hot weather cause varicose veins to get worse?
One of the most asked questions about varicose veins is "does heat make varicose veins worse?", answer Unfortunately, "yes".
Hot baths, saunas, hot water pools and hot weather conditions cause varicose veins to worsen, and their accompanying complaints such as heavy legs, pain, cramps and itching are further exacerbated.
So how does this affect varicose veins and how does it cause them to get worse?
When our body gets hot, it responds by trying to cool itself down and It does this by widening the vessels, allowing more blood to flow to the surface of the skin. This means more blood flow to varicose veins and increases the volume of blood passing through the veins. As you know, varicose veins are a condition in which the valves malfunction and blood flows in the opposite direction. So, when more blood flows into these veins due to our cooling mechanism, it can put more pressure on them, causing swelling, blood accumulation in these veins and damage.
So what do we do with this? How can we protect ourselves from this situation?
First of all, the simplest solution is to avoid excessive heat. This means staying away from saunas, hot baths and prolonged exposure to the sun.
In hot weather, take measures to cool yourself; sit in the shade, avoid the sun during hot hours (11:00 - 15:00). You can also use wet towels or cold gels to keep your legs cool, or apply them to the back of your neck to keep your entire body cool. Additionally, be sure to drink plenty of water, knowing that dehydration can also cause cramps.
Whenever you get the opportunity, lift your legs higher than your heart to ensure that the blood flow defies gravity and flows towards the heart. Also, exercise and stay active to activate the muscle pump, which is the most important mechanism that ensures venous blood flows towards the heart. This will also help prevent swelling in the feet and ankles. r.
