Things to Know About the Psychological Counseling Process

Everyone may need psychological support at some point in their life due to events, situations or emotions that they cannot cope with. The support received during this period when emotions are very sensitive is of great importance for the person. This may lead to expectations about the psychological counseling process that do not match reality.

There are a few important information I would like to point out about this process.

  • First of all, the psychological counseling process is a "process". Expecting to get immediate results from the first session will most likely be disappointing. Meetings with your psychologist/psychological counselor patiently and adhering to the intervals you have determined will greatly help you in achieving your goals.

  • Knowing that the mental health professional from whom you receive psychological support is not your "savior" in the process. It will be quite useful. “I will go and explain my problem. He will tell me what to do. "He will tell me something that will make all my problems disappear." The thought of not getting any benefit from the process will cause you to despair and perhaps abandon the meetings with the thought of failure. In your search for help, your counselor will help you understand yourself and take action to become your own savior. In other words, it does not give you a fish, it teaches you how to fish.

  • “Awareness”, “Being Aware”, “Noticing” are the most important elements of the consultancy process. Situations that disturb us, emotions we cannot cope with, etc. It is not possible to intervene in those things without knowing what is going on within ourselves (What do I think? What do I feel?). Awareness can sometimes bring with it pain, anger, mourning, and depression. This is a very healthy and sometimes even necessary thing to do. Just like in real life, it is unrealistic to always expect happiness and feeling good during the counseling process.

  • The extent to which one will benefit from the psychological counseling process depends on the effort of the client. Even if the best solution is found in the session, if the client does not take action and take responsibility in his life in this direction, the result will not be satisfactory. r.

  • Psychological counseling meetings are usually planned once a week in the beginning. However, the mental health professional you see will determine the most appropriate meeting frequency for you. It may be appropriate for some clients to come twice a week, while others may come once every 2 weeks.

  • The appointment day and time you set with your consultant days in advance belongs to you. The counseling room is reserved for you. Your advisor will prepare for you before the meeting. It waits for you, ready for you. Cancellations made less than 24 hours in advance are considered to have been consulted. And a consultancy fee is required. This situation may be misunderstood by the clients and as a result, it may cause a natural feeling of anger. However, this framework is intended both to preserve the therapeutic relationship, which is a very important factor for the counseling process, and to underline that continuing the sessions is an important responsibility that the person takes for himself.

  • Are you ready to be your own savior, to turn your energy back to "yourself" and invest it in the person who really deserves it? With love…
