THE BACK PAINS OF SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN ARE CAUSED BY THEIR BAGS!

Many of my pediatric patients apply to me with complaints of chronic back pain. Unfortunately, we frequently encounter waist and back pain in children, just like adults.

Research shows that approximately 70% of our school-age children complain of backpack-related pain.

Carrying heavy school bags, and especially carrying them on one shoulder, can cause waist and spine asymmetries in our developing children. The most common disorder is Lordosis. (It is the lower part of the spine protruding forward.)

So How Do Our Children Carry Their Backpacks Correctly?

First of all, the size of the bag should be Let's talk about how excess weight is calculated;

Maximum bag weight = It should be 15% of the child's weight.

After paying attention to this Then;

When picking up the bag from the ground, the child should not be allowed to pick it up quickly and hit it on the back and shoulder, as if throwing it. The bag should be lifted carefully and hung balancedly on both shoulders.

Children generally prefer to carry their bags on one shoulder, this should be prevented. The bag should be carried on both shoulders with equal lengths of the straps.

It is important that the straps are tight, sit on the back and that the bag does not sag towards the hips.

A bag that sits above the waist, at chest level, sitting snugly on the back. It means it is in its most correct position.

The materials in the bag should be placed in the back compartment and close to the back, while flat and heavy materials should be placed in the back compartment, and round, lumpy and protruding materials should be placed in the front compartment.

When Choosing a School Bag. Things to Consider;

The more supportive straps a backpack has, the better. In other words, we recommend that families choose such models as bags with back, shoulder, chest and abdominal straps will distribute the weight and will not put pressure on a single part of the body.
