Prejudice and Discrimination

Preconceived notions are pre-formed stereotypes based on insufficient information. It is often based on stereotypes. Many of us allow the effects of bias in our lives. For example, when we meet a girl, we think that her favorite color is pink. This is an example of a harmless and simple provision. However, prejudice causes social problems due to the negative actions it brings with it. Prejudice can occur consciously or unconsciously. The person who forms prejudices against others may not realize that he is doing this.

So how do we form these judgments? Prejudice is often based on ignorance. The solution is education, but most people choose to remain ignorant because the provisions make them feel superior. Victims of a particular type of bullying may go on to become bullies themselves. Likewise, if a person is subject to prejudices, there is a chance that he will have similar ideas about others. A bad experience with a person from a particular group can cause a person to think of all people in that group the same way. This is called stereotyping and can lead to prejudices. Scapegoating is also an example of a certain kind of prejudice. A person or group can be held responsible for the sins or wrongs of another person or group.

The concepts of prejudice and discrimination are often confused. Although these two concepts are interconnected, they do not mean the same thing. Discrimination characterizes the behavior of relatively powerful people towards less powerful people. Prejudice is a phenomenon that everyone can develop against each other. In other words, while prejudice is more of a mental attitude, discrimination is defined at the level of observable behaviors. Generally, the behaviors that follow after prejudice is formed bring about discrimination. Forming preconceptions can lead to discrimination, but a person can prevent it without discrimination if they themselves recognize it and take steps to prevent it.

Social norms and cultural contexts play an important role in the types of prejudices a person is likely to have. Racism and sexism are types of prejudices that are very visible and cause social problems. Slavery, racist ideas It was formed when it turned into discrimination that was accepted and normalized by the majority of people. Beliefs that black people were inferior, that black people experienced less pain and emotion, and racist ideas about black behavior were all used as justifications to support slavery. Sexist ideas about women have led to important social problems such as rape and abuse

Exposure is a powerful method against forming prejudices. People who spend more time with people who are different from themselves are less likely to form prejudices. Today, especially in America, white people's choice to live in areas where only white people live is an example that prevents exposure. This discrimination can reinforce and encourage racist attitudes because people with little experience of cultural diversity are more likely to form judgments about it.

Therapists in particular must learn to control their thoughts. Prejudgment can undermine the therapeutic process and harm clients. A therapist's preconceived notions about a group can influence clients' views. A therapist who harbors these provisions or is unaware of their effects may not recognize the power dynamics in therapy. For example, in family therapy, a therapist who forms preconceived notions may not recognize the power dynamics between men and women. Therefore, it fails in managing the therapeutic process.
