It should not be forgotten that the primary cause of gum disease is microbial dental plaque. Hormonal factors play a susceptibility-increasing role by changing the local response to the existing microbial plaque. If they make chewing or brushing difficult, they can be removed during pregnancy with a simple procedure. They often regress or disappear completely after birth.
