Depression and its Treatment with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

A motionless dead bird is in the museums of the world,

Motionless with aromatic wings bound to concrete...

The Turkish meaning of the word depression is "Depression". Just as we can physically carry a certain weight of load at maximum, but become weak and collapse when it is too much, we also experience collapse in the face of heavy loads in our emotional world. Depression is a state in which the person is disinterested in the things he or she has enjoyed for a long time, avoids activities, looks hopelessly to the future, experiences sleep problems or appetite changes, feels weakness, lack of energy, forgetfulness or distractions increase, feelings of worthlessness and guilt are intense, and the most severe is suicide. It is a mood disorder that even causes thoughts. It is not necessary to have all of these symptoms together to be diagnosed with depression; However, if the person has a depressive mood or intense disinterest in people or activities and meets several of the other symptoms, he or she may need to consult a specialist.

Depressed people tend to see the negative events in their lives as personal and permanent. They see themselves as inadequate, worthless, and guilty in many respects, and at the same time, they think that no one around them cares about them, and that this will continue to be the case in the future.

A significant loss lies at the center of the thought content of depressed people. He perceives that he has lost something that he sees as essential for his happiness or peace, and he sees himself as lacking the necessary qualities to achieve important goals. Their thoughts about the events they experience are usually as follows:

“It's all my fault”

“I am inadequate”

“I am guilty”

“My life is messed up”

“Everything is so bad”

“Nobody can help me”

“This one's never going to get fucked”

To become depressed, it is not enough to have an insurmountable problem in life. Depression can have many causes. The first of these is related to our personality structures, and the accompanying chemical changes in our brain are also diagnostic of depression. It may cause us to get heat. Again, these alone do not cause depression; we must be accompanied by negative life events that can trigger depression, and finally, the absence of a supportive environment prepares the necessary environment for depression.

Cognitive Behavioral Treatment of Depression

According to cognitive theory, rather than the negative life events we experience; Our perceptions about those life events, the meanings they create in us, and our thoughts actually determine our mood. In depression, we use cognitive therapy to work with feelings such as inadequacy, inadequacy, guilt, worthlessness, and pessimistic thoughts about the future, caused by negative thoughts or already existing in our foundation.

Depression treatment is completed in 5 stages by applying cognitive behavioral therapy. The first stage of treatment is to educate the client about depression. In Stage 2, the aim is to increase the client's activity level with behavioral interventions. In the 3rd stage, within the scope of cognitive theory, how do negative thoughts and the negative emotions they cause occur, and how can unrealistic negative thoughts be changed? This is addressed. In Phase 4, more fundamental depressive schemas are studied for clients with chronic depression, and finally, in Phase 5, preventative work is done to address future recurrence of depression.

If you have observed that you have been showing depressive features for a while and this has started to affect your quality of life, you can get help from a psychologist who is an expert on this subject.
