Although most kidney cysts are simple cysts, the possibility of cancer in some of these cysts should always be kept in mind.
Ultrasonography plays a major role in the diagnosis of kidney cysts. And usually that alone is enough. Some of the cysts carry a risk of cancer, and some clues in ultrasonography direct the physician to examine this issue in more detail. Simple cysts are generally handled with periodic ultrasonography follow-ups before they reach a certain diameter. Surgical intervention may be considered when the cyst grows more than 5 centimeters in diameter and causes pain or hypertension due to its location. Kidney cyst can be operated openly or closed depending on its size, structure and location. There are two types of closed surgeries. Removal of fluid with a needle or surgery laparoscopically.
Summary: Kidney cyst is usually diagnosed when ultrasonography is performed. But after that, it is checked at least twice a year. When it grows or in cases of pain and blood pressure, surgical intervention is performed.
