It is a disorder known as a "disease" in the society. Individuals with this disease believe that they have a physical illness that does not actually exist and/or ordinary and innocent physical symptoms (such as simple arm numbness, abdominal pain, dizziness) may indicate a serious illness (heart disease, intestinal tumor). They interpret it as a symptom of a brain tumor. Naturally, an individual who interprets a bodily sensation in this way will immediately consult a doctor in the relevant branch (such as a cardiologist, internal medicine specialist, neurologist). However
one of the main difficulties of individuals with this disease is that even though doctors say "We have done all the necessary research and examination, there is no serious physical disease of the type you are afraid of", they are not convinced of this, they do not have a serious
disease. These patients are referred to a psychiatrist after the necessary evaluations are made by the relevant physicians and no physical illness is detected. However, many patients prefer to see another internal medicine specialist
or a neurologist instead. He looks for a doctor who will "diagnose" his physical illness, new tests are performed, and this search goes on for a while. Every new doctor, every new test and treatment will cause this disease, which is actually a mental disorder, to get worse. Therefore, it is very important that these patients
follow this recommendation when they are first referred to psychiatry. Because the solution to their problems
is actually not even medication, but psychotherapy.
Even if medication is used in some special cases, the main way to eliminate these patients' beliefs that they have physical illnesses is the psychodynamically oriented therapy they will receive regularly. or cognitive-behavioral
oriented psychotherapies.
